Earth Science - Creative Lessons for both kids (K-8) and educators! - 2 views

  •
This site provides lessons on a wide array of earth science topics that kids can access at home which includes interactive videos, games, activities and lessons. It also provides great resources for teachers that can help foster creative lessons with the content. The website is a little confusing at first because each link (topic) will redirect you to another website (i.e. National Geographic) but it exposes you to different approaches to teaching the content.
  •
Wow! There is a lot of information on this link directly related to Earth Science. I am currently going through each link and writing down notes to help me with some of my future lectures. Thanks so much for the link that brings it all together so that I don't have to have a search overload for some of these great resources!

I really like how the website provides "featured articles" that are very current and pertain to "hot issues" going around currently. It's great to have a wide variety of information in terms of subject so that student's can learn more; however, being able to read up on something more recent might intrigue them a bit more because they are familiar with it.
  •
I use the website all the time for student independent research idea generation! For our students seeking to enter ISEF, Siemens, and other science competitions new & exciting ideas energize them and get them to push to the next level - find mentors and perform high caliber science.

PBS Teachers | Engineering Resources - 0 views

PBS Kids has activities that do a good job of linking engineering to science, math, and technology. The website has many characters which my students identify with. Many of the activities and concepts, that are covered, are for younger students, but some are for the upper grades.

Great website- it is very "children" oriented due to the nice colors, drawings and simplicity. I love it for the content that is accessible by young learners but I appreciate it even more because it has very innovative classroom activity suggestions (as well as lesson plans) for teachers. Even more importantly, there have a listing for family activities for each subject, which I think is great because learning can be even more meaningful when it is done outside of the classroom.

GREAT website for computer simulation of the inside of a typical cell, how mitochondria function,, and more! The Harvard team puts together great videos to show in class. I use these as a G.A. to show that although the 2D diagrams in the text book are static, in fact the cell is moving constantly. Great resource for the biology classroom.

What is TPACK? - 0 views

This website is a brief overview of the TPAC model. Basically TPAC is a framework that incorporates technology, pedagogy, and content knowledge. According to the website, "As teachers, we understand intuitively the layers of complexity that technology adds to our work with students but the TPCK (also TPACK) framework makes these layers of complexity explicit. It captures the kinds of knowledge required for the effective integration of technology in the classroom."

I like to share the resources that I find with other colleagues and educators.  Building a website has allowed that to be easy.  It took quite a bit of time, but maintaining it is easy and I utilize Edmodo quite a bit, along with Pinterest to add to my collection of resources.

Very cool! I need to learn how to do one of these.

I sent my life science kids here to check out a more in depth look at organelles and their functions. A bonus is the great narrator voice. This website has a bunch of fun interactive cell activities, and links to some great videos as well.

100 Best YouTube Videos for Science Teachers - 1 views

  •
I don't have too many go to sites yet (I hope that improves in the near future) but I did run across this compilation of youtube videos related to science that I think will be helpful in the future. Given some of them are way too basic to use, but there used to be really cool look inside the cell type stuff. The original site shut down so I had to find where someone else posted the links on their blog so my apologizes if you can not access it at this time.
  •
Hey Eric- Thanks for posting this website- I was looking through the videos and happen to come across some that I think might be useful for me when I start teaching very soon!

Where learning comes together - SMART Technologies - 0 views

  •
Innovation to me is the enhancement of education using customized tools. Recently, there has been great buzz about promoting SMART technologies- a collaborative leaning software that accommodates a variety of learning styles- promoting varied instruction. The SMART notebook collaborative learning software is the world's leading lesson creation software that opens options for interactive lessons that support student-centered learning. Of the vast technologies within this field I seemed to find SMART boards as a very innovative tool for classroom instruction. A SMART board is basically an interactive white board that allows teachers to project a website or image from the laptop to the white board. These SMART boards are capable of storing and saving lessons as well as turning simple lessons into more interactive and customized ones geared to enhance student learning. I think this application is more useful in disciplines such as Science because science changes all the time and has the ability to be much "active" using the web- this is not to say that it cannot be useful in the other disciples however.

I just came across an amazing resource. This link has lesson plans, class activities, k-12 outreach programs, web resources, you name it, it is probably on the website. And best of all it all has to do with engineering and is broken down into grade level appropriate activities.

Interactives . The Rock Cycle . The Rock Cycle - 0 views

A useful way to illustrate how the three main types of rock are related to one another and how changes to rocks happen in a recurring sequence is the rock cycle. This is a great interactive feature that teachers can weave into their lesson plan or allow students to work on during home or class time. This same website www.learner.org has content for other Earth Science fields as well as other disciplines: math, science, history and literature.

I am currently taking a class to wrap of my licensure in physics, and the professor is using PhET for the experiments. Nonetheless, I spent most of today playing with all of the cool little simulations on the website. I love this site.

TPACK in the Arts Classroom - 1 views

  •
Jamie Kasper, associate director of Arts Education collaborative, provides her own perspective or interpretation of the TPACK model.
  •
Favorite line(s): o "TPACK gives us a model to think about the intersection between technology, content, and instruction" o "We can say the same thing about technology: while we can spend a limited amount of time learning the skills to use it, we eventually need to move beyond skills to think about technology's use in learning."
  •
The pencil analogy she makes is fantastic. "Think about this: in the 1500s when the pencil was new, people generally did not study how to use the pencil." I agree. In 1997 when I decided to go into teaching, the tools of the classroom (overhead projector, chalk, copier) really did not need to be taught as part of the college courses. Now, mastery of the tools we have and the software and websites available is necessary to be a strong educator. I also hate to use these terms, but you are "adding to the plate" of teachers by making them learn more than we had to learn in the past. But technology also "takes things off the plate" by saving great amounts of time in the daily routine of a teacher. I used to spend hours with a calculator on grades each six weeks (yes, six weeks) figuring out grades. It also took much more time finding a parent's phone number, calling, leaving a message, waiting for the call back than simple email technology gives us today.

What is TPACK? | TPACK - Technological Pedagogical and Content Knowledge - 4 views

  •
First and foremost, I really like the diagram that this website created for defining tpack, it really helped me to grasp a more through definition of TPACK. Second, a notable excerpt from the article: "Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) attempts to identify the nature of knowledge required by teachers for technology integration in their teaching, while addressing the complex, multifaceted and situated nature of teacher knowledge. At the heart of the TPACK framework, is the complex interplay of three primary forms of knowledge: Content (CK), Pedagogy (PK), and Technology (TK)."

Students in schools from all over the world can enter scientific data.  This is a great way to truly integrate technology with education - students can do "real science" and collaborate with their "colleagues" from other countries.  Great for biology, earth science, environmental science, etc.

This interactive site provides links to THE NROC Project, Phoenix college, KHAN Academy, PhET, and STEM bite. The resources use digital media that incorporates lessons for science and math. Students are able to learn concepts and apply the skills needed to show their understanding of these concepts. Students are given assessments on this site that check for understanding.

Khan Academy is a really awesome self-paced website that allows students to practice math skills on their ability level. It also allows them the opportunity to master the skills they are learning and gradually move forward to work on more challenging skills.
