A good site describing what TPACK is and its history.

Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) attempts to identify the nature of knowledge required by teachers for technology integration in their teaching, while addressing the complex, multifaceted and situated nature of teacher knowledge. At the heart of the TPACK framework, is the complex interplay of three primary forms of knowledge: Content (CK), Pedagogy (PK), and Technology (TK). See Figure above. As must be clear, the TPACK framework builds on Shulman's idea of Pedagogical Content Knowledge.

This article shows how technology not only aids student learning, it motivates students, builds confidence, creativity and problem solving, increases content knowledge, helps students with special needs thrive and reflects the demands of the modern world. And, therefore, it gives relevant info to make a successful technology plan. It offers as well an interesting comparison between what digital learners vs. what many educators prefer when it comes to education.

As real time is translated to 'cyber time' how often do we think of the students when we plan for technology? Do we do what's best for them or convienent for us?

This document, prepared by graduate students at Mississippi State University, is a comprehensive guide to elaborate a successful technology plan. It considers not only what must be taken into account technology wise, but the actual mechanics of the plan. It can be a good guide for those with less experience wishing more detailed advice.

This is a pretty extensive how to guide for creating a technology plan. It is wordy, but very detailed.

I loved reading here about how self-esteem in students increases as a result of the use of technology. I hadn't thought about it, and the examples it presents make me think about a good number of situations I have witnessed myself in which kids who struggle at almost everything can master rapidly a technological device, and how that becomes a golden opportunity for them to shine...

2006 paper on the development of technology

This quote struck me: "1995: Survey of teachers reported that computers were rarely used for instruction, but were used in elementary schools for drill and practice and in secondary schools for computer-related skills such as word processing" It was already 1995!!!! Things have changed so much in so little time!!!! I love to be able to see all these changes!! I love to have become an adult while witnessing so many revolutions of all kinds....

Summary of Technology in Education in the 20th Century

This article make a profound connection which evoked intrinsic reflection on my part. It's simplicity, coupled with these conection makes this piece of advice true no matter what we are planning for. "Sometimes, one of the key elements-a key tool-in the planner's arsenal is pure, simple honesty. This means that planners must commit themselves to shed any defensive feelings they might have, or be threatened to adopt, as they examine their particular situation. True, sustainable growth comes from facing the honest reality of a condition, then working together to build a strategy for guaranteed success." (L.S. Anderson, 1999) National Center for Technology Planning Hence, technology planning is more than computers, it's a way of life.

I love how the article is focused towards people and the planning itself more than the machines... No matter what technological resources we have at hand, they may be well used or totally underused... It is true! It's more about the community and how the plans are developed, connecting all individuals, than about the physical devices.

Technology planning has transended the straightforward process which was characterized by a task force which determined the what, when, where and who of the plan and the assumption that an implicit map from points A to B is the pinnacle of implementation. They now emphasize characteristics that help to coach and manage transitions. At the heart of such is communication which emphasizes communication with and concern for the implementers. In my opinion, this plan emphasises such as it reorganizes the planning process to consider vital aspects of the planning process that many tend to side step- Planning to plan and communication.

Interesting example! Very down to earth... You can notice they have gained the experience necessary to be able to plan in such a straight forward way!

As I read this information about TPACK it seems like deja vu. I'm confused. Is this a method, idea or guideline to technology integration?

I think it is meant to be all three of those ideas. As with all new theories, it is an ongoing and evolving process.

This is what I get...TPACK emphasises the connectivity of technology, pedagogy and content. What I don't get is the "how to" and "the part I play." The article is quite detailed about the "how to" of TPACK but is also very confusing. However, other articles seems to ramble on about the "what is" of TPACK. How does this model add to what we already know about technology integration? OR Is it just structuring what we already know about technology integration? What is the fundamental thought behind the concept of TPACK?
