A review of renewable utilization in islands - 0 views

  •
This paper explores the benefits that sustainable resources benefit remote islands. The lack of a grid connection to the mainland, and high cost of imported fossil fuels along with ideal conditions make sustainable energy technology an excellent choice. The technology allows the systems to be used as a standalone option for remote villages and locations.

Puralytic: Solar Bag Technology for Water Purification - 0 views

  •
Is it possible for the sun to provide the only source of power for a complete water purification system in a portable bag? Until now we would not give the idea much thought. But why not? We make "sun tea" where you put tea bags in a container of water and place the container outside in the sun to naturally brew the tea.

Sustainable because everyone can get involved with technology - 1 views

  •
In this YES! Magazine article by Kayla Schultz, Canadian Sophie Toupin remarks on how inaccessible technology seems to women and others considered a minority to the traditional "white hacker" notion. Toupin talks about the need for all members to feel safe and supported to explore whatever notion they deem interesting. This includes the opportunity to lead group sessions regardless of age, orientation, or any other possible classification ... as long as socially-minded sustainable ideas are crossing thresholds of imagination.

Ecology Action: Home - 2 views

  • ware of intensifying world challenges and the basic need of people to feed themselves, we have been working for 40 years to develop an elegant, small-scale agricultural system — GROW BIOINTENSIVE® Sustainable Mini-Farming — that when practiced correctly, nurtures healthy soil fertility, produces high yields, conserves resources and can be used successfully by almost everyone. Our goal is to help this system be known and used locally...on a worldwide basis.
  • ohn Jeavons spoke at Google in Mountain View on April 12, 2012 about his four decades pioneering biointensive farming and what we can do for food security in the future.
  •
John Jeavons has been doing this work for over 30 years. I studied with him In Northern California. I found it fascinating that he spoke at Google in Cali recently. Even though his method is not technology intensive it is science based and is feeding the world in many ways.

This car is very interesting! Here is a youtube video if you are more interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0RBl1LFUQ4c I like that it is very affordable. I wonder if it will catch on in North America. I can definitely see it catching on in Europe. I had to edit this because I found more up-to-date information about a different company called Peugeot who is planning to release an air powered car in 2016 from the UK's Daily Mail website: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2568732/Car-runs-air-set-hit-streets-year-Peugeot-claims-new-hybrid-117mpg.html I am not sure how good of a product this car will be but I am happy to see the development of technology like this.

Hemp: The Versatile Plant of Durable Fiber - 1 views

  •
Hemp is such an amazing plant. From it an array of oils, plastics, paints and twine can be created ... of such strength Kentuckians were able to avoid WWII draft by staying home and growing hemp. The fiber of this plant is so strong, that the government was eager to have farmers plant and grow it (with government provided seeds) so that the best parachutes, laces and other materials could be made for soldiers and the war. "Breathing in 4x the carbon dioxide (CO2) of trees during it's quick 12-14 week growing cycle. Trees take 20 years to mature vs 4 months for Industrial Hemp" So why are we still clearing forests and avoiding the CO2 sync of this marvelous resource???

It bothers me greatly that so many people are completely unaware of the technology that was available in regards to electric cars in the late 90's. It's as if the media has short term memory loss concerning this matter as well.

LED bulbs: The end of the lightbulb as we know it? - 0 views

  •
Not only is it important to find and implement new sources of abundant and hopefully renewable energy sources, it's necessary to conserve what is being produced. Electricity for light has long been massively inefficient. Our incandescent lightbulbs are in essence the same technology Edison introduced. LEDs are the next wave of electrical lighting, improving in lumen output, spectrum of light, and probably most important for its success, cost.

Solar Updraft Towers Generate Mega Power - 0 views

  •
An Australian company has proposed a massive non-polluting power plant in Arizona. Utilizing a technology first implemented in 1903, this project would include building the world's second tallest structure. In essence, it's a massive conical greenhouse, funneling its rising heated air through power producing turbines.
