This NYTimes article discusses the influence of technology on an art museum, and the potential effect it could have on the art world. The Cleveland Museum of Art has created an iPad app for its entire permanent collection, something that is almost unheard of as of yet. The app can revolutionize the way people see the exhibits and view art museums. The app seems like a fantastic way for people to be more interactive with a piece of artwork on a wall in a museum. This seems to be an example of technology boosting and enhancing the art experience.

A fascinating article written by CEO of GrantStation, a company that aims to help non-profit organizations find sources of grant money. The author discusses her experience with her company of moving it all online and into the crowd.

An interesting article that discusses how more and more people are buying their tickets through mobile services. This is behavior not only seen with younger generations; it's a move all across the board. The hope is that increased easy availability of tickets for sale on mobile devices will increase overall revenue. I guess only time will tell if this holds true. It seems like with the rise of the internet, subscription available performances have seen an increase in single ticket sales but a decrease in subscription based sales.

A new ballet uses video live-stream technology to get two different ballet schools, with students from 18 different ballet schools, in two different parts of the world to create a joint performance at the same time. This is a pretty great experiment and experience for the students. I would say it's a rather unique experience. But maybe it will become the norm?

An interesting prediction about the effect technology will have on the traditional orchestral concert. Is traditional music a thing of the past? Is nanotechnology detecting instrument movement the wave of the future? Perhaps the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

An interesting report revealing the (mostly) positive effect technology has had on arts organizations.

"For whatever reason people, especially in the arts and culture sectors, remain fearful of using technology and social media in a way that enhances communication. I hope my example of effectively utilizing Twitter demonstrates how social media can play a crucial role connecting communities by sharing information and ideas with others in the field."

Drew McManus provides a compelling example of how easy it is, and how crucial it is for arts organizations, to create better websites. He shows how one was designed in 13 days for only $500.

There is so much discussion in the art community about how the ability to digitally alter a photograph impacts its perceived "legitimacy". My favorite quote from this article, which sums up my position on the debate: "... no amount of technology will turn a mediocre photographer into a great one. Nor, in conceptual terms, will it transform a bad idea into a good one. For that you would still need to possess a rare set of creative gifts that are still to do with seeing, with deep looking."

This site allows you to find specific performance locations and times of ballet/opera in HD at the cinema. This is one of the best examples of Ballet meeting Technology and using it well.

SpectiCast is a private digital broadcast company focused on distributing unique content for which there is underserved demand. SpectiCast broadcasts live cultural and performing arts and entertainment events never before available to Multi-Viewer Venues TM, including assisted living facilities, independent care facilities, and continuing care retirement communities, for use in their community entertainment spaces.

Through the Education Leaders Institute, the National Endowment for the Arts will convene decision makers from several states to develop coordinated state arts education strategies to design public education with arts at the core. Rocco Landesman, former head of NEA, delivers a wonderful speech explaining why the arts are so important and why they need to be included in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education.

University of Wisconsin-Madison offers summer classes for students completing grades 5-8 that integrate technology with the arts. It's great that people are beginning to realize that technology and the arts can complement each other, and are offering these kinds of classes to such young students. I wish I was young enough to take some of them!

Thomas Cott is the director of marketing for Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. "You've Cott Mail" is a fabulous weekday email for arts enthusiasts, managers, administrators, or artists. He picks a different topic everyday and scours the web for interesting/good/useful blogs, articles, etc, compiles them into one email with several links, and delivers it to your inbox. I can't recommend "You've Cott Mail" enough.

Billy Collins' poetry made visible by animation artists...whimsical, quirky and evocative. He reads a poem while the animation plays; the words and the images are entwined. The only text for each poem is the title formatted in accordance with the content. Sherri Vanden Akker shared this with me in response to one of our assignments. I find them very enjoyable and provocative!
