Scholastic - 0 views

A great website for teachers, students, and parents. Teachers can get lesson plan ideas, additional resources to complement Scholastic News subscriptions, order items and books for the classroom, and print mini-books and other reproducibles. Students can have discussions with others who are reading the same or similar books and learn about new books and authors. Parents can find activities for their child and even learn about how their child's reading develops.

This is a great website where you can download audiobooks to a computer. They then can be transferred to an MP3 player for listening. I have done this for sections of books that we have read in class. All you need is a public library card

I love this website! I use it to download audiobooks for my ipod to listen to while driving back and forth to Dousman to visit my father. Students with reading challenges could also benefit from the use of audiobooks.
  •
How neat! I could use this in my class listening center. It'd be especially helpful for my struggling readers. Thanks for sharing!
  •
A great resource similar to Amazon for reading book reviews and downloading the digital version of good books.

A great place to go for affordable books.
  •
I've used this site before and was very pleased with the speed of shipping!
  •
A great alternative to Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Borders.

Fakebook - 4 views

  •
This website allows students and teachers to create imaginary Facebook pages for study purposes. Within the site you can choose from historical people such as Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill or Queen Elizabeth. Students can create a profile for their person and choose their "friends." They can also add posts and comments to their person's Fakebook page. This website can be used for book reports, character plots from novels, historical moments and many more educational purposes.

I can't believe this resource is free! I checked out a few fakebook entries that students had submitted such as Shakespeare and the comments posted among students were very informative while being fun and often hilarious at the same time! I always do a composer research project with my 5th graders and allow students to choose how they want to present the information, such as through a skit or poster. I'm definitely going to add this site as another option for students to share their learning in a creative way!
  •
I just checked this out. It actually seems much more user friendly than myfakewall. Thanks for the resource, Erin. I'm going to use this with my classes for the next novel that we read.
  •
Very cool. Like Greg, I've seen myfakewall, but not this one. This will be a great thing for us to do in my 7th grade classes when we talk about cyberbullying and online safety. The students will love it!

This site has some really neat ideas for new and interesting ways for students to show their knowledge. It is an excellent resource for book report ideas. The site also provides links to other helpful websites. I did find the site a little strange to navigate in that the directions for creating a project are located in one place and then it directs you to another location on the site for pictures or drawings of the process, but overall it is still a good resource.

Teachnology Timeline Creator - 2 views

This is a website that allows you to add up to six events to a timeline, which can be a great way for students to organize and make sense of materials, especially in a book with a confusing plot.

This timeline creator was very easy to use. I wish I had access to this tool when my students were reading a fictional story in which the characters traveled through time.
  •
This is a great tool to get students to get their schedule of events organized when working on a project. We could go over the project timeline and create one with this. The students would like it.
  •
This site really makes it quick and easy to create a timeline with both dates and descriptions. I plan to utilize this site for reviewing a few social studies units. As we are studying the Constitution, I have students record in their notes a list of major events in chronological order. They might actually enjoy creating a timeline using this site and printing out the results.
  •
This timeline seems pretty simple and easy to use. I think that I could use it in my new Music Appreciation class that I'm teaching next year. It would really help students with remembering composers/artists dates.

Sorry, Laurie, I keep reposting your resources. I apparently have not mastered the search function yet :).

My own kids like this site. It is a nice way for them to use technology in an educationally sound way. And yes, I have played some of these games as well. Fun!

A fun site for K-8 activities

Edhelper Literature Units - 0 views

  •
Edhelper.com has a lot of very good literature units for almost any popular novel that is studied in school. Earlier in the year in reading my students read The City of Ember and I was able to find the literature unit on Edhelper. Within the unit you can customize pretty much everything from vocabulary lists to crossword puzzles to even quizzes. You can also choose how much or how little you want to include in the unit. I find that these worksheets make nice comprehension reviews for students. One downfall to Edhelper is that you do need a membership but I do find that it is worth it.

BBC Skillswise - 3 views

This sites boasts of 50 different educational games on its site. It also recommends trying a new one everyday. The games do actually cover a wide variety of topics: comparing decimals, making sentences, and confusing words to name a few. I played the Making Sentences game, which can be played by students of all ages to reinforce the essential elements of a sentence. I did get all 10 correct if anyone feels up to the challenge:)

The BBC Skillswise website is very well organized and has a wide variety of games, activities, and worksheets especially for mathematics and language arts. They have a Quick Read section where you can download the first few chapters of "bite-sized" books by best-sellling authors. Students can also practice their scanning skills through many formats from online activities to worksheets. One game called "Who Killed Angela Spelling" is a fun way for students to test their ability to scan text for specific information. This might be a good activity prior to doing research. The site also offer a wealth of resources for students to practice pretty much any area of mathematics.

This is a really neat website. I am always looking for games that my students can practice on and review new concepts, skills and strategies. In looking through the games I was impressed by how challenging some of them were. A lot of the games that I have found on previous sites are pretty easy but these are challenging. I tried playing the Apostrophes game, Beat the Clock on fast speed and I couldn't beat the clock!

This site has lots of interactive elements and many resources. There are phonics games for practice and review, and "alphabet organizers" where students can make their own alphabet books, using their own words. There are interactive poetry tutorials that allow the student to easily create and print his/her own poem. I like that the site has literacy activities and ideas for students in middle school -- I've never met an ELL student that likes to do second grade work.

Treasures - 0 views

Treasures has some really good graphic organizers to help students reinforce strategies and skills. The organizers can be found on the Treasures link under the start menu on any computer from school. The Treasures website also has extra information to help teachers organize their lessons.
  •
I clicked on the oral language link and found resources for "advance organizers". Now I won't have to always create my own. Thank you for sharing.
  •
The Treasures website has some fun games that reinforce skills/concepts that are taught. We find the book we are working in, and then work on the skills specific to that week. (language arts, phonics, etc)

Lego City - 5 views

Middle schoolers love this! This site is very fun, obviously engaging for students, and could be used for varying purposes. Students can create their own comics, using as many or as little words as they like, and individualize their projects setting the scene and characters.

I think elementary students would enjoy it too. Thank you for sharing the site.
  •
I just spent a little time playing with this, and it's very user friendly. My students would be able to figure it out in no time, and create some very suspenseful comics. I also like how you can adjust the sizes of graphics and you can "tilt" the setting. Students will enjoy how detailed they can be. I can use this as an alternative to professor garfield. Thank you for sharing.
  •
Very cool site. I'm thinking of a way I can use this with my 8th graders as they storyboard for their projects. Very fun!
  •
I love Legos! This is a really cool site. I will have to use it in an upcoming reading project.
  •
This is more than just building with Legos on the computer. This is placing them in a story-board and coming up with a comic book/story with the Legos. What a creative way to use Legos without actually having them in your hands!
