Gina Capaldi, A Boy Named Beckoning: The True Story of Dr. Carlos Montezuma, Native American Hero (Minnesota: Carolrhoda Books, 2008). Grade Level: 2-4 Publisher Description: This story reveals the remarkable life of a Native American boy named Wassaja, or "Beckoning," who was kidnapped from his Yavapai tribe and sold as a slave. Adopted by an Italian photographer in 1871 and renamed Carlos Montezuma, the young boy traveled throughout the Old West, bearing witness to the prejudice against and poor treatment of Native Americans. Carlos eventually became a doctor and leader for his people, calling out for their rights. Gina Capaldi's exquisite paintings bring to life excerpts from Dr. Carlos Montezuma's own letters describing his childhood experiences. The culminating portrait provides an inventive look back into history through the eyes of a Native American hero.

Grace's every mistake costs her mother, and the family. She only feels capable on Sundays, when she and Arthur receive special lessons from their teacher. Together they write a secret letter to the Child Labor Board about underage children working in Pownal. A few weeks later a man with a camera shows up. It is the famous reformer Lewis Hine, undercover, collecting evidence for the Child Labor Board. Grace's brief acquaintance with Hine and the photos he takes of her are a gift that changes her sense of herself, her future, and her family's future.

Christy Jordan-Fenton and Margaret Pokiak-Fenton, Fatty Legs: a True Story (Ontario: Annick Press, 2010). Age Level: 9 and up Publisher Description: Eight-year-old Margaret Pokiak has set her sights on learning to read, even though it means leaving her village in the high Arctic. Faced with unceasing pressure, her father finally agrees to let her make the five-day journey to attend school, but he warns Margaret of the terrors of residential schools. At school Margaret soon encounters the Raven, a black-cloaked nun with a hooked nose and bony fingers that resemble claws. She immediately dislikes the strong-willed young Margaret. Intending to humiliate her, the heartless Raven gives gray stockings to all the girls -- all except Margaret, who gets red ones. In an instant Margaret is the laughingstock of the entire school. In the face of such cruelty, Margaret refuses to be intimidated and bravely gets rid of the stockings. Although a sympathetic nun stands up for Margaret, in the end it is this brave young girl who gives the Raven a lesson in the power of human dignity.

Caroline Castle, For Every Child: The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (New York: UNICEF, 2001). Grade Level: K-3 Publisher Description: Fourteen of the rights that were formally laid out by the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child are highlighted. The book begins with an introduction by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who asks readers to help make a difference. One double-page spread is devoted to each featured tenet, which is illustrated by a different artist. Some of the pictures are bold and dramatic, while others are quiet and subdued. Some are whimsical and others are serious. All bring home the point. Each illustration covers almost the entire spread, with the text on a small strip of white at the bottom. The artists include John Burningham, Shirley Hughes, Rachel Isadora, Satoshi Kitamura, and Jerry Pinkney.

Amnesty International, We Are All Born Free Mini Edition: The Universal Declaration of Human Rights in Pictures (London: Frances Lincoln Children's Books, 2011). Age Level: 6-9 Publisher Description: The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was signed on 10th December 1948. It was compiled after World War Two to declare and protect the rights of all people from all countries. This beautiful collection, published 60 years on, celebrates each declaration with an illustration by an internationally-renowned artist or illustrator and is the perfect gift for children and adults alike.

This WWF report brings together a variety of quantitative information and on the current state of global biodiversity and human impact on nature. Confronting the fact that people are using 50 percent more resources than the Earth can provide, this report summarizes this information and suggests changes in action to slow and reverse current trends.

Tremont first grade classrooms partnered with H2O for Life, an organization that helps find solutions to the water crisis around the world. The first graders learned to become global citizens. Students at Tremont learned that while we are all different, together we can make the world a better place.

The Environmental Literacy Council (ELC) is an independent, nonprofit organization made up of scientists, economists and educators striving to connect teachers and students to science-based information on environmental issues. ELC's website offers more than 1,000 pages of background information and resources on environmental topics-Air & Climate, Land, Water, Ecosystems, Energy, Food, Environment & Society-along with curricular materials.

One Day Without Shoes is our day to bring global awareness to children's health and education by going without shoes.

The Lesson for All is a set of two units focused on the right of education and the barriers that youth around the world experience when trying to access that right. Written by teacher Donna Roman, each unit (K-3 and 4-6) has four lessons with multimedia, discussion and modes of assessment. Each lesson is mapped to the Common Core State Standards and the Global Competence Matrix.

This requires comprehensive efforts to ensure that every man, woman and child enjoy their Right to Adequate Food; women are empowered; priority is given to family farming, and food systems everywhere are sustainable and resilient. April 5th, 2013 marked the 1,000-day milestone until the 2015 target date to achieve the UN's Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), a development framework to improve lives worldwide. On that day, a community of individuals, organizations, and institutions celebrated successes to date, reinvigorated discussion on the MDGs themselves, and began to advance a post-2015 development framework that builds on #MDGmomentum.
