A richly interactive site where visitors can design and create varied genres of art. A virtual tour through the NGA has an accompanying guide in 5 languages. Extensive information on artists from all eras. Lots of activities at the teacher's site. A good instructional site. Grades 3-12.

This art site allows children to explore American Folk art, landscapes, abstract art, still life, and digital photography. Children are able to manipulate art to create their own pieces. Students can also create a tropical jungle. There are additional online resources for teachers, as well as a link to exhibits from the National Art Gallery.

This page contains several art activities for children, including interactive art programs that allow students to create portraits or still life pictures. There is a link that allows students to search for specific artists or works. This site would be a good resource for art teachers, but English teachers could also use it to find different works of art that appeal to kids and could be used for descriptive writing assignments.

This site is chocked full of art activities for the student artist. Examples include the study of American Folk Art then creating landscapes,create a still life like the masters, or try your hand at abstract art.

A deep archive of arts databases sponsored by Harvard. The image database is a great collection of original photos that can be searched by artist name. I searched Picasso and found photos of the artist himself as well as other photos that may not be relevant to research. However, the site is a wealth of information for art students. Great links to the Smithsonian collections.

As a classroom teacher, art was always a struggle for me. As I was looking through our curriculum guide, I noticed one of the national art standards asks students to "Understand and apply media, technique and processes. This site allows kids to create collages using different shapes and layering. There are size, transparency, flip and turn functions. Printing is an option. This would be fun as station activity.

This is an online painting machine for all ages. It includes 40 brushes and customsizable size, transparency, texture and stroke options. A rainbow palette, along with a toolbox of special effects, that blur, ripple, smudge, blend, and fragment your designs. This is a fantastic Web 2.0 tool for teachers because your art can be temporarily saved, and there is the option to print, print to pdf or take a screen shot for sharing your art. This is a blast!

The Smithsonian has webpages for students, families, and teachers. The student site has primary sources in the format of pictures and video footage. They are called IdeaLabs on this site. The IdealLab I found interesting was the Walk on the Moon. It included a video footage from the Apollo landing on the moon and President Kennedy's address to the nation.

This website organizes some of the Smithsonian Institution's vast resources into four topics for students to explore: art, science, history and people/places. There are incredible virtual tours, online interactive labs, games and activities. The site has an educator's section with lesson plans and a search feature to find resources by keyword, grade, and subject.

Explore art, science, history, and people like never before. If you teach the solar system, plate tectonics, volcanoes, or rocks and minerals the Dynamic Earth site is for you. I was so impressed being able to go online and zoom in on hundreds of different rocks, minerals, and gems. Fascinating!

National Gallery of Art interactive site. Create portraits, landscapes, or paint a still life. The is a gov doc created for kids to help them interact with famous artwork and create some of their own.

This website is good for the Language Arts teacher or classroom. It has many links to primary sources regarding Shakespeare and other English topics. If a teacher were to delve deeply into the meaning or topics of Shakespeare's works, this would be a good place for students to get information.

Kids.gov is a gov doc that links to websites for a wide range of subjects from art to health to money to states including American Samoa and Puerto Rico. It has sections for K-5students, 6-8 students and educators.

A place for art and culture, literature and language arts, foreign language, and social studies. Includes a vast collection of grade level lesson plans and activities for those areas mentioned above. The monthly features are especially entertaining. For example this month features spotlights on Hispanic heritage month, and the history and origins of Halloween and Day of the Dead celebrations.

This is an amazing site that is current.  It is called the National Security Archive.  It has recent documents from the Iraq War, the Torture Archive and September 11th.  This site would be excellent for many classrooms.  A current events teacher might use it, as well as history, language arts, or government.  

This is the world's largest collection of Native American writings.  It houses all types or writings that document Indian Life from the "Indian perspective."  It has a collection of literary writings from Native America writers. This site could be very useful in either a history or language arts class.  

This site is a large collection of documents relating to the Presidency. There are documents such as election debates, party platforms, Inaugural Addresses, and press conferences.  This would be a great site for a history teacher or for a language arts teacher who might be teaching how speeches are constructed or given.  

Here is a collection of paintings by Crockett Johnson (1906-1975) which are dubbed "mathematical paintings" and could be studied in both art and math. The one linked is Archimedes Transversal, but 80 total are included in this online collection.

This site is filled with information about the environment. Although it appears to be geared for younger children there is a link for middle school and high school students, too. This site can be used by science and art teachers alike. There is something for everyone here.

On a note of local interest for all OPS teachers, the Media Technology Center Library and the Joslyn Art Museum have worked together to provide classroom access to these historical, informational traveling exhibits. From Douglas County History to Native American History, call 557-2500 and have the trunks delivered to your classrooms to use for two full weeks. I work in this department one day a week -- and was totally thrilled to be introduced to these marvelous sets of get-your-hands-on primary sources. They can be used in primary grades through high school.

This great site allows teachers to visit work of famous artists right in their classrooms. One of my favorite exhibits is that of artist Norman Rockwell showing a slideshow of his most popular pieces of work.

This site provides information about poets and their poetry that Literature/Language Arts teachers could use in their classrooms. There are links to specific poets, such as Ted Kooser and Walt Whitman, as well as a link to recorded poetry. Students could research poets, they could listen to poetry, or they could read poetry on this site.

This site has an abundance of information related to most classroom uses. It has information on English, math, science, geography, history, art etc. There are short power points to show to students, worksheets and many other ways to use this site. It will be helpful to teacher in more than one area.
