This website allows users to create easy animations with cartoon-like characters. What sets this site apart from others is creators' ability to add their own voices to the animations.
This site is relatively new - launched within the past year. They have a fantastic Twitter presence (@simplek12) and share lots of interesting news, links, and strategies through their blog. Some services are premium, but they also offer many free tools (the biggest one being a 21st century skills assessment test!).
Glogster is a free service that allows you to create a multimedia poster. Glogs can include images, audio, and video. Direct integration with SchoolTube makes video embedding easy. The education version of the site keeps students isolated from general user content. Students can use this as an alternative to reports, to give presentations, or to react to literature (among countless other uses).
One of Dr. Topp's suggested sites, NEWTON gives children the opportunity to connect with real scientists from around the world. If a child is having difficulty finding the answer to a question using traditional methods, he or she can search the archives on this site or ask the question. Depending on its content, a scientist may answer the question.
Nebraskastudies.org is a visual, interactive timeline of significant events in the history of Nebraska and the world. Each image in the visual time line is a link to an article with more information and media to go along with the topic. The site is a joint venture of NET public television, the Nebraska Department of Education, and the Nebraska State Historical Society.
EconEdLink is produced by Thinkfinity. It contains links to hundreds of different lesson plans and resources to help teachers plan lessons for economics from K-12.
Videoconferencing/broadcasting website. Allows users to broadcast over the Internet with a webcam and microphone. Also allows a split-screen broadcast view to show an interview. Shows can be recorded and hosted on wetoku.com. Neat alternative to Skype - especially if you want to broadcast your interview/conversation or if you don't want to install 3rd party software. Not as mature as ustream, but it has potential!
