Digital Curation: Alternatives to Storify - 0 views

  •
In order to fulfill the task of analyzing and presenting their Twitter activity, students would need to use an alternative to Storify. Unfortunately, I did not have a backup plan (i.e. a selection of other curation tools for them to use.) So we took this list of 40 curation tools, divided it up among the students in the class (each student tackled 2 of the items on the list), and quickly evaluated each one to see if it would fit our needs. If you'd like to take a look at the results of this evaluation, you can view the GoogleDocs spreadsheet that resulted from my students' work.

Dark Social: We Have the Whole History of the Web Wrong - Alexis C. Madrigal - The Atla... - 0 views

"The main situations in which this happens are email programs, instant messages, some mobile applications*, and whenever someone is moving from a secure site ("https://mail.google.com/blahblahblah") to a non-secure site (http://www.theatlantic.com).  This means that this vast trove of social traffic is essentially invisible to most analytics programs. I call it DARK SOCIAL. It shows up variously in programs as "direct" or "typed/bookmarked" traffic, which implies to many site owners that you actually have a bookmark or typed in www.theatlantic.com into your browser. But that's not actually what's happening a lot of the time. "

MOOCS: The new higher education? |e-Literate - 0 views

Is a "personal brand" in social media much different from a old fashion portfolio, i.e art, model, teacher, etc. except it is digital, more creative and fluid?

The Open Scholar - 0 views

  •
" institutions of higher education are invested in keeping their scholars and those scholars' intellectual products limited and cloistered. This is a profoundly poor use of valuable resources, but it's bound to continue until institutions decide to reward scholars for doing more than contributing to niche knowledge communities."

Textbook Publisher Pearson Takes Down 1.5 Million Teacher And Student Blogs With A Sing... - 0 views

  •
"Textbook publisher Pearson set off an unfortunate chain of events with a takedown notice issued aimed at a copy of Beck's Hoplessness Scale posted by a teacher on one of Edublogs' websites (You may recall Pearson from such other related copyright nonsense as The $180 Art Book With No Pictures and No Free Textbooks Ever!). The end result? Nearly 1.5 million teacher and student blogs taken offline by Edublogs' host, ServerBeach."

We scour the Internet for the best quality textbooks issued under open licenses that allow for printing. Instead of finding a list of 500+ books, you'll find a short list of books we feel are really adoptable and ready to use in a college classroom.

"The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) gives parents control over what information websites can collect from their kids. If you run a website designed for kids or have a website geared to a general audience but collect information from someone you know is under 13, you must comply with COPPA's two main requirements."

The Must-Have EdTech Cheat Sheet - 0 views

"There's a whole galaxy of terminology that you should know about when it comes to education technology. From PLNs to Blended Learning to Synchronous Online Learning… it can get overwhelming. Dubbed the EdTech Cheat Sheet, I think it's one of the most useful infographics out there today. You should consider printing this out and keeping it handy should you ever come across some crazy term that doesn't make sense to you."

    Abandon LMS at Universities?
  •
I think there is still a need for LMSs, but not all the features of the LMS. We need a gradebook, a quiz engine, and a private massaging/forum system for convenience and compliance. Everything else can be done elsewhere, as long as instructors are willing to open up their course materials. My $0.02.

Your Problem Isn't Motivation - 0 views

  •
"Each attempt to "motivate" himself will only increase his stress and guilt as it widens the gap between his motivation and his follow-through, between how badly he wants to work out and his failure to do so. We have a misconception that if we only cared enough about something, we would do something about it. But that's not true. "
