Constructing Gender Stereotypes Through Social Roles in Prime-Time Television. - 0 views

    This article does not address media coverage of politics but addresses media coverage of women and men in television shows. Women are often portrayed doing jobs such as childcare, nurse, household chores, and teachers while men are seen as doctors, lawyers, and the dominators of the family. Although this is changing, it still plays a significant role in most television shows. Women do not only struggle with gender roles on television but often male writers dominate female writers in the film industry. By using a different example of literacy in my paper, it will show how women are betrayed in the media besides political media. This is important to use as support for my main points in the paper. I can relate gender bias both in politics and in television to show people how this is just not happening in one area of the public media.

Crafting a linguistic façade known as "intelligent design" has allowed conservatives to covertly enter the scientific realm. Scientists, he argues, must assemble themselves, as the authoritarian populists have, in order to uphold the very best of science. Apple does a particularly exceptional job examining the psyche of the conservative alliance and its widespread cultural impact.

The author does a great job in explaining this to other teachers in particular teenage literacy teachers. The discourse of gender and literacy is a topic that has become popular in the past few years and Harry Potter is a perfect book for it.

    Georgiou shares the view of how school achievement is effected by the unity of a person's family. Children with parents that have greater incomes and better jobs tend to do better academically than students that comes from lower income. Georgiou conducted a study that shows the differences between the SES and socioeconomic status between suburban and urban schools. The results showed that test scores for people with low income tend to be lower because the lack of unity in their families. Even though this study focuses on schools on the island of Cyprus, this can relate to any urban and suburban schools.

    The authors discuss how college students' overreliance on credit cards and accumulated student loans have left many graduates with outstanding debt and poor credit scores. Credit card companies aggressively solicit college students, who are enticed by the power a credit card grants. Upon graduation, students with large sums of debt may find it difficult to find a job or rent property due to poor credit. To counter this surge of irresponsibility, the authors propose colleges create programs to educate students on how to use a credit card responsibly. The problem with creating more programs is universities must spend extra funds to create and maintain such an initiative. The authors fail to propose an early education curriculum for younger children to immerse them in the area of personal finance.

It discusses the importance and demands of everyday writing in work, and the role of formal education in preparing people for the localised learning about writing that is necessary upon entering work. It considers the issue of the transfer of knowledge, and argues that both metacognitive and conceptual understandings about writing are crucial elements in enabling people to transfer and adapt foundation literacy skills to the workplace.
