Networked teachers began to use a number of types of tools and connected well beyond what was normal within a "typical" teacher network. Teachers are not just connected WITH these tools, they are connected THROUGH these tools to other humans. The most important part of PLNs, in my opinion, is how they can help us connect to other humans, to help us better understand the world, to negotiate knowledge and meaning, and of course, to help us to learn.

The system is under attack from all sides - and rightly so. The Delta Project report lambasted colleges for doing a poor job of cost containment. Marc Scheer penned No Sucker Left Behind which exposes a system of education that is failing on all fronts - it's too expensive, there is no real access, and the quality is poor.

Future generations of learners will no doubt look back at the global economic crisis of 2008-9 and reflect on which institutions were agile enough to make a difference by bringing the wisdom of their scholars together with the acumen of their technology officers and the ingenuity and determination of their university leaders.
