Seth's Blog - 0 views

The best reason to brand someone with a pejorative label is to push them away, to forestall useful conversation, to turn them into the other. Much more useful: Identify the behavior that's counter-productive. When we talk about the behavior, we have a chance to make change happen. What would happen if the behavior stopped? When we call someone misogynist or racist or sexist or a capitalist, a socialist or an abstract expressionist, what are we hoping for? Every one of us is on the 'ist' spectrum, so the label becomes meaningless. Meaningless labels are noise, noise that lasts. If that person stopped acting like a _____ist, what would change? Because if there's nothing we want to change, the labeling is useless. And if there's a change that needs to be made, let's talk about what it is.

Superior Water & Air Arbinger Case Study - 1 views

  •
Superior Water and Air is a plumbing, heating and air conditioning business founded in 1956. Rob Anderson, a senior Superior employee, and a partner, Mark Combourn, purchased Superior in 2007. While Superior was a solid company when Rob and Mark bought it, the company was small and wasn't growing. Rob, who was now CEO, wanted to grow the business, but felt stuck in how to go about doing so, especially with a workforce that he considered stagnant and complacent. He then also discovered that his company was suffering from fundamental business deficiencies. Rob knew that he needed to find a way to change the way the each employee operated if he wanted to remedy the company's deficiencies and grow the business.

Are You a Leader People Can Trust? - 2 views

  •
Joel Peterson, a Robert L. Joss Consulting Professor of Management at Stanford Graduate School of Business implies that the reason many leadership attempts eventually fail can be attributed to a lack of trust. "Trust is more powerful than power itself," he remarked in a recent article. Thus whether your title is CEO, HR Director, or Sales Manager, your power as a leader does not lie in the position itself, but in your ability to build trust with those around you.

Great article, Joe! Key lesson - "As you strive to value one another and hold each other accountable, the trust you gain will enable unlimited space for innovation, collaboration, and success as a leader."

How to Save Your Organization From Cultural Breakdown - 2 views

  •
Think your organization is in tip-top shape? "There's a saying that people don't need a doctor until they're sick," said Sam Whitney, one of the brains behind the Mindset Audit. "One of the problems with an inward mindset is that you don't know you have it. We wanted to develop a tool that could expose organizational mindset really quickly, and would allow people to walk away with an analysis of their score as well as suggestions for moving forward. As soon as you start to see those weak points, you begin to question the virtue of your organization's effectiveness, and that in turn causes you to question your place, and your part in that organizational breakdown. You're revealing a foundational mindset, and bypassing a lot of the common barriers by getting to the core of organizational issues."

Arbinger in Education: A Professor's Perspective - 2 views

  •
After reading the material I realized how important these concepts are to leadership and that we were missing this aspect of leadership in our curriculum. We were teaching leadership theories and leadership skills (like giving good briefings, or being a good listener), but not focusing on the interpersonal aspect of leadership. The Arbinger material brings home for the students the relational side of leadership. Also, the students really connect with the stories and enjoy how the books are written as a narrative rather than a list of points to memorize. This material is a needed break from the endless stream of PowerPoint bulleted lists they get in most classes these days.

Helpfulness Isn't a Formula - An Excerpt From The Outward Mindset - 1 views

A long-time colleague of ours, Terry Olson, tells of the following experience that began in a workshop he was conducting for public-school teachers. Some of the teachers from that school were eavesdropping at the back of the room.

Focus on Results - A Leader's Responsibility - 1 views

  •
There comes a point in a leader's journey when they are most likely faced with and then forced to grapple with the following question: "How can I have an unflinching focus on results while honoring and seeing people as people?" A bigger problem may exist in the leader avoiding such a question, or worse yet, never pondering it.

Microsoft and other big names in tech are actively hiring autistic coders - 1 views

""They have a real passion for detail," Mark Grein, executive director at Specialisterne, said in an interview from Stamford, Connecticut. "They tend to be very good at following a process, improving a process, optimizing a process." SAP SE, the German software maker, has hired 53 workers worldwide since 2012 through its Autism at Work program and is aiming for 1% of its staff, currently at 74,500, by 2020. "We do have clear anecdotal evidence of business benefits from our pilot program," including gains in productivity, quality, customer relations, people management and innovation, said Jose Velasco, who heads SAP's autism program in the U.S."

4 Questions to Ask Yourself for a 10 Minute Reality Check - Arbinger - 1 views

  •
Arbinger's new way of speaking about this same phenomenon-inward and outward mindset-illustrates the same principles. An inward mindset describes a mentality wherein the individual is focused solely on him or herself. Again, akin to being in the box, from an inward mindset others don't matter like I do. We are cut off from and closed to their needs and challenges-their humanity. An outward mindset describes a mentality wherein the individual is focused on collective success and wellbeing. A person with an outward mindset is aware of and alive to the needs, concerns and objectives of others and understands that their needs, concerns and objectives matter.
