AW Extra 7/26/12 - 10 Techniques for Tighter, Faster, Stronger Miter Joints - Woodworki... - 6 views

  • Make micro adjustments with a disc sander
    • Bryan Koppert

I've never seen this work as well as they claim it does.  If you don't do the same thing to all the pieces, the edges won't line up right.
    • Student One

I tried this, even though you told me it wouldn't work very well.  You were right; it didn't work very well.  I rounded the miter a bit and made it worse.
  • Knock-off blocks for long miters
    • Bryan Koppert

This is an interesting idea!  I want to try this.
  • Customize a drafting square
    • Bryan Koppert

Not a bad idea, but I would still check the actual cut.  Practice piece!

We did something like this on Jack's molding.
  • Your finger can detect differences your eyes can’t.
    • Bryan Koppert

Your finger can feel differences of less than a thousandth of an inch!  That is less than .001"!
  • Stop cutting creep
    • Bryan Koppert

Interesting.  Don't wet it too much that you damage the piece.
  • The 60-second squeeze
    • Bryan Koppert

I'd let the glue tack a little bit before putting the pieces together, but don't wait too long.
  • Notched blocks for no-rush glue-up
    • Bryan Koppert

We have some of these.  Matt used them for his molding.
  • Grain match matters
    • Bryan Koppert

Good idea, but it could increase waste.  The better look might be worth the waste.
  • Notched blocks for no-rush glue-up
  • Use hot water to soften any paper or glue left on the wood, then scrape it away and sand as usual.
    • Student One

I used too much water, and it weakened the joint.  One spot actually came apart.  I would recommend using hand tools to get rid of excess stuff.
    • Bryan Koppert

I was afraid of that.  We have to remember that the normal wood glue we use is water soluble.  That's why for cutting boards or outside projects we have to use a different type of glue.

If we made a panel saw like the one in the background, we wouldn't need to crosscut full sheets of plywood on the table saw anymore.

What is Wood? | The Wood Database - 0 views

  • Hardwoods (angiosperms) have broad-leaved foliage, and tend to be deciduous—that is, they lose their leaves in the autumn.

We've talked about this in class.

Quarter Sawn vs. Plain Sawn vs. Rift Sawn Lumber | Northend Hardwoods - 0 views

  • In a quarter sawn board, the growth rings of the tree are closer to perpendicular to the surface of the board than in most plain sawn boards. In certain species of wood, most notably Oak,  this creates a beautiful visual effect.
    • Bryan Koppert

This is that amazing fleck pattern from the medullary rays that so many of you comment on when you are lucky enough to find a flat sawn board with some of this in it.

For those who are still getting started and those who have been doing this a long time, an online subscription is pretty worth while.  I would still investigate the topic further outside of FWW, but they usually are right on with their information.

  • Keep it square. The key to this jig is to keep the edges perfectly square with the catch rail that is attached to the bottom face of the jig.

A jig like this could have a lot of uses in our shop.

"Dubby" - The Original Table Saw Sled | In-Line Industries - 0 views

  •
This is the table saw sled that I used to cut the pieces for my segmented bowls. It is an amazing sled.
  •
I've been thinking of building something similar to this. I think if it were made right, it could also be used as a taper jig, along with other things. Adding a few more holes could make this type of sled very versatile.

This is helpful information when restoring a handplane.
  •
Good information. Remind me sometime, and I'll show you The Hand Plane Book. Take a look at most of our planes; you'll see I've done most of these suggestions to ours. I haven't tuned any of the frogs, but ours seem to plane well as they are. I have cleaned our frogs and adjusted them. Given more time, I'd like to completely over-haul one plane, complete with a mirror polish on the sole. Way over the top, but it would have to look sweet!

Have you tried this yet? It seems like it would make deeper grooves than the file does.

I have tried this. It works, but it eventually needs redone, as all other methods I've tried. Thanks for looking into it.
