The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers reported an acceleration in automotive sales and production on both a sequential and y-o-y basis in August. Auto output rose by 4.5% m-o-m and 7.8% y-o-y and sales rose by 8.4% m-o-m and by 8.3% y-o-y in August. The industry's performance in August compared to last year has resulted in an improvement in the year-to-date production figure, which now stands at 12.47M units, up by 5.2% y-o-y. production of passenger vehicles has outperformed those of commercial vehicles, up by 8.7% y-t-d (reaching 10.0M units) and down by 7.2% y-t-d (reaching 2.5M units), respectively.

S.A. Eredi Gnutti Metalli S.p.A., an Italian copper and copper-alloy extrusions and flat rolled product fabricator, has taken over Dalmet S.p.A., another Italian company which competes in the production of copper and copper-alloy flat rolled products. Dalmet has the capacity to supply 3,000t/y of flat rolled products to the electrical, electromechanical, electronic and automotive components, ornaments, door locks and medals manufacturing markets. With this acquisition Eredi Gnutti increases its rolling and casting capacity.

China's production of major nonferrous metals including copper, aluminum and lead has continued to be on the high rise this year. According to data from the China Nonferrous Metal Association

However, it remains cautious about demand from the automotive industry as it may decline in early 2011. According to production plans, H2 FY2010-2011 output in Saitama, Japan, will amount to 3,600t/m whilst that in Mie, Japan, to 1,850t/m. Actual production in H1 FY2010-2011 reached 5,400t/m (3,600t/m in Saitama and 1,800t/m in Mie). It was reported that the automotive industry accounts for 45% of the company's output. Automotive makers are expected to cut their output by 20%, now that the Japanese government's eco-friendly car subsidy scheme has ended. As a result, automotive component makers are anticipated to cut production by 5-10%. To respond to that possible downturn, Mitsui Sumitomo Metal Mining plans to increase sales to consumer electronic product manufacturers.

According to the International Copper Study Group, the world refined copper market is expected to exhibit a surplus of 200,000t in 2010, up from a surplus of 166,000t in 2009. The ICSG believes that increased supply is forecast to match the growth in demand. After the 36th regular meeting of its statistical committee in Antofagasta, Chile, the ICSG reported that refined production is estimated to reach 19.1Mt in 2010 whilst consumption is projected to total 18.9Mt. As for 2011, it is anticipated that the refined copper market will see a deficit of 435,000t, with production at 19.3Mt and consumption at 19.7Mt. It was commented that improved economic activity will boost end-use demand faster than the growth in production. In addition, refined production will grow only slightly due to a shortage of concentrates.

Olin Brass, a division of Global Brass & Copper LLC since Global's $400 million purchase of Olin Corp. in November, is looking to increase product prices in response to rapidly increasing costs and softening demand from end-user markets. The price rises are one aspect of a wider re-organisation by Global in an attempt to offset rising raw material and energy costs. According to the company these initiatives have led to productivity gains of over 10 percent, freeing up significant working capital. However Global comments, "our input costs keep going up at such a rate we simply can't be profitable despite cost savings that we've put in place. We need to receive more for our product." Olin is also being hit by depressed end-user markets. As the slowdown in residential construction activities following the sub-prime mortgage crisis continues, demand in the fabrication sector remains low. The US Department of Commerce reported a 3.3% drop in housing starts in May, with building permits for future construction declining to an annual rate of 969,000. Despite the somewhat bleak outlook the falling dollar against a basket of foreign currencies has lead some copper and brass business that was moved offshore to return to the U.S. lately. "It's not a torrent of products coming back, but whereas in 2001 through 2003 we saw an exodus of business from here to China, this has slowed if not balanced out with some things coming back" according to Olin Brass. BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European Commission will launch a raft of proposals on Wednesday to curb the environmental impact of consumerism in the 27-nation EU by supporting eco-friendly products and technology. The plan comes as the European Union moves to cut energy consumption amid soaring fuel and power prices and as part of its ambitious mid-term goal of cutting carbon dioxide emissions by one fifth by 2020, compared to 1990 levels. "This will mainly be targeted at products that use a lot of energy, such as computers, televisions, water heaters and industrial fans," a source at the Commission, the bloc's executive arm, said on Monday.

ArcelorMittal (NYSE: MT), a steel manufacturer based in New Deli, launched a clean technology venture capital fund to support ventures that have relevance for the carbon-intensive steel industry. The Fund has made its first investment of US$20 million in Miasolé, a California-based pioneer in the development of thin-film solar panels Miasolé has developed unique high volume manufacturing processes that enable efficient production of Copper Indium Gallium Selenium (CIGS) solar products on a flexible stainless steel substrate. This technology promises to dramatically lowers the installed cost of Photovoltaic (PV) systems and will enable renewable energy from the sun to replace carbon generating fossil fuels. Fund managers will be working with leading venture capital firms, including Bessemer Venture Partners, Khosla Ventures, and Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, to identify worthy cleantech ventures. ArcelorMittal also announced that it has created a new carbon fund in order to strategically engage in the carbon market and promote climate friendly solutions that are relevant for the steel industry. The fund, which has an initial investment commitment of €100 million (US$ 157 million) is currently looking at investment opportunities in renewable energy, energy efficiency, methane capture and greenhouse gas reducing technologies--all of which have the potential to generate carbon credits under the Kyoto Protocol. ArcelorMittal intends to use the carbon credits received from these Clean Development Mechanism and Joint Implementation projects for compliance in the EU Emissions Trading Scheme.

Mexican copper miner Grupo Mexico posted second-quarter net profit of $452m Monday, down 14% versus the same period a year ago, with copper output down from a long-running strike. The company reported sales of $1.758bn, down from $2.089bn last year, as well as a 22% drop in EBITDA to $960m. A strike at the company's largest copper pit, the giant Cananea mine, has dragged on for a full year, cutting into production of the red metal, the company's primary product.
