Aneel's College Board of Directors has authorized Copel (Paraná Electric Energy Company) to implement the pilot-project which determines the selling of exceeding energy, derived from animal waste, produced in small rural proprieties in Paraná. The project, named Distributed Generation with Environmental Sanitation Project, will allow the elimination of organic matter resulting from the hog creation, which will stop being released over rivers and deposits such as Itaipu's. Such residue will be transformed, via biodigesters, in biogas, a fuel used in the generation of electric energy.

Marine Current Turbines is getting ready to flip the switch and fully commission a grid-connected 1.2-megawatt (MW) Seagen tidal turbine-based system in Northern Ireland's Strangford Narrow, while elsewhere in the EU, project developers and the marine renewables community await the much-anticipated commissioning of Pelamis's novel, serpent-like wave power system off the northern Portuguese coast.

These projects include new railway lines connecting Guiyang and Guangzhou, Lanzhou and Chongqing, Kashgar and Hotan in Xinjiang; highways between Wanyuan and Dazhou in Sichuan Province, Shuikou and Duyun in Guizhou Province; airport expansion projects in Chengdu, Chongqing and Xi'an.\n\nThey also include the building of hydropower stations, coal mines, gas and oil transmission tube lines as well as public utilities projects in western regions.

Nexans and Bruker HTS announced that a high temperature superconducting distribution level cable project has been successfully completed. The project, called Super 3C, commenced in June 2004 and was finalised in December 2008. It was financed by the European Union and the investment amounted to 5.2 million euros. The cable achieves power transmission of 17 megawatts and it features second generation high temperature superconducting tapes.

"It's obviously had an impact on our projects, but we have the advantage of having the majority of the projects in the evaluation phase so we can put them off for the following years," Xstrata Copper CEO Charlie Sartain said. However, Xstrata's copper unit still has a number of projects coming on line this year or expanding output, which will help to solidify the company's role as the world's fourth-largest copper producer, he said.

Jingcheng Copper Co. Ltd. announced that it will expand its high precision copper alloy sheet and strip project from 20ktpy to 30ktpy. The new project will produce brass strip for linker, socket connector, decorating, electronic equipment and other applications. The total investment of the project amounts to 495M yuan (US$73M) whilst it will take 23 months to construct. Jingcheng Copper is a copper and alloy sheet and strip fabricator located in Wuhu City, Anhui Province, with total capacity of 70ktpy and annual production value of 2B yuan (US$293M).

When Southern California Edison unveiled plans to install 250 megawatts' worth of solar panels on warehouse roofs back in March, it was hailed as a ground-breaking move. In one fell swoop, the giant utility would cut the cost of photovoltaic power, expand the solar market and kick-start efforts to transform untold acres of sun-baked commercial roof space into mini-power plants. There's just one problem: the solar industry is fighting the billion-dollar plan. In briefs filed with the California Public Utilities Commission, solar companies, industry trade groups and consumer advocates argue that allowing a utility to own and operate such massive green megawattage will crowd out competitors who can't hope to compete with a project financed by Edison's ratepayers. (In California, shareholders of investor-owned utilities are guaranteed a rate of return for approved projects, while utility customers bear a portion of the costs in the form of higher rates.) The five-year plan "would establish SCE as the monopoly developer of commercial-scale distributed solar in its service territory," wrote Arno Harris, CEO of Recurrent Energy, a San Francisco company that sells solar electricity to commercial customers. "This would irreparably impair the development of a competitive solar industry."

The Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) will provide a loan to Bahrain's National Electricity and Water Authority to finance a 220 kV transmission development project. Funds will amount to KWD15M (US$52.8M) whilst the project aims to reinforce Bahrain's power grid. The project envisages the construction of ten 220 kV substations, and laying 515 km of 220 kV underground power cable. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2012; it is anticipated that total investment will reach US$657.8M.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced that it will provide $36 million for 15 projects aimed at furthering the development of new and cost-effective technologies for the capture of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the existing fleet of coal-fired power plants. \n\n"Currently, the existing U.S. coal fleet accounts for over half of all electricity generated in this country," U.S. Secretary of Energy Samuel W. Bodman said. "The projects announced today will combat climate change and help meet current and future energy needs by curbing CO2 emissions from existing coal-fired plants." \n\n

Like Inca Pacific, Southern Copper Corp, Candente Resources, Strike Resources Ltd and Newmont Mining Corp (NEM.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) have complained of having to reexamine or delay their projects in Peru because of the global crisis. Southern Copper has said plans for its Los Chancas would be evaluated, and that it may consider dipping into dividends for project funding.

Jinglong Electric Material Co. Ltd. has started a special type enamelled wire project in Tongling City, Anhui Province. The company was established in 2003, engaging in the production and sale of enamelled wire. Capacity was restricted to 10,000t per annum due to dispersed plants. But by consolidating operations, Jinglong will reach annual capacity of 25,000t, also meeting local copper demand. The new project occupies 53,000m2 whilst its investment amounts to 80M yuan (US$11.7M). It is anticipated that upon reaching full capacity, the company will realise annual revenues of 950M yuan (US$139M).

General Cable announced that sales in terms of the volume of metals sold increased 6% y-o-y and 2% q-o-q, principally attributed to aluminium-based product shipments for use in aerial transmission projects in Brazil. Discounting the sales for Brazil's aerial transmission projects, growth in shipments to the country still increased by 9% q-o-q and 5% y-o-y. The company benefitted from Brazil and Venezuela's increased spending on electrical infrastructure, Chile's spending on construction and mining activities and also the release of industrial projects in Thailand. Volatility of metals prices contributed to some distributors and copper rod customers deferring purchases, particularly in Zambia and Chile. The company also reported stable demand from North America for electrical infrastructural projects, networking and OEM applications while Europe experienced a sequential rise in shipments of 4%, which was lower than expected due to difficult trading conditions in Southern Europe. However, European sales were buoyed by submarine and land based turnkey cable projects, which accounted for $600M.

The National Development and Reform Commission of China approved 25 new urban rail transit and intercity rail projects in investment programmes worth RMB800B (US$127B). The projects are expected to be completed in the next three to eight years. Local governments will be major investors, however, banks loans are also expected to constitute a significant portion of the total investment funding.

It was reported by Antaike that the construction of Anhui Xinke New Materials's copper rod and cable project in Wuhu Jiujiang Industrial Park commenced on 12th December. The construction of the project was commissioned to Wuhu Xinsheng Electric Materials, Xinke's wholly-owned subsidiary. Upon completion, the operation will have a production capacity of 150,000t/y of high quality copper rod and 20,000t/y of special cables.
