Micro-manufacturing Now Offers Advantages For Specialist Processes - 0 views

  •
Miniaturisation is not new, but manufacturing mechanical, electromechanical and fluidic components on a micro scale is rapidly developing into a recognisable industry in itself. Alistair Rae reports on a selection of the latest developments in this exciting field. Over the past few years a new industry has developed to serve the growing demand for micro-manufacturing. While miniaturisation has been ongoing since the commercialisation of the transistor some 50 years ago, it is only recently that it has been viable to manufacture high volumes of mechanical and electromechanical components with features in the sub-millimetre range.

Association of European Automotive and Industrial Battery Manufacturers - Sustainabilit... - 0 views

The battery technology for plug-in HEVs and EVs (both fixed and removable) has evolved tremendously over the last decade with the introduction of lithium-based batteries complementing lead-, nickel- and sodium-based technologies. These technologies will all continue to have a significant impact on electro-mobility as they may give cost and/or performance advantages for specific applications, for example as start-stop and hybrid solutions. The selection of a technology depends on the requirements for performance, life and cost for a given application. Given the diversity of possible operating modes, there is no one battery system or technology that covers the entire range of application needs sufficiently. On the contrary, different battery energy storage technologies exist and each of them has a role to play in the future as the best solution to the needs of a system depending on their specific attributes: * Lead-based: for start-stop micro application, up to mild HEVs * Nickel-based: for HEV applications only * Lithium-based: for HEV, plug-in HEV and full EVs * Sodium-based: for Plug-in HEV and full EVs

Disentangling India's Investment Slowdown - 1 views

  • his paper documents the recent slowdown in investment in India and explores its underlying causes.
  •
"He concludes that standard macroeconomic factors alone (growth, interest rates, global growth, and global financial market volatility) fail to fully explain the recent investment deceleration. He further concludes that while the importance of structural factors in explaining the recent weakening of aggregate investment is not entirely clear, at the micro level, panel data analysis suggests that improving the business environment by reducing costs of doing business, deepening the financial system, and developing infrastructure, could stimulate corporate investment." The IMF's (2013a) recent staff report on India argues that several causes of weaker growth seem to be of a supply-side nature. The following key factors are listed as possible contributors to the recent investment slowdown: Rising policy uncertainty. In particular, high profile tax policy decisions announced in the 2012/13 Budget have reduced foreign investors' interest in India, while the increasing difficulty of obtaining land use and environmental permits have raised regulatory uncertainty for infrastructure and other large-scale projects. Delayed project approvals and implementation. As a reaction to high-profile governance scandals, project approvals, clearances, and implementation have slowed sharply. Supply bottlenecks are particularly pronounced in mining and power, with attendant consequences for the broader economy, especially manufacturing.

480+ Microgrid Projects Are Proposed, Under Development, or Operating Worldwide - 0 views

  • Many new microgrid projects are still under the radar, and many local projects originate organically, without official designations or titles, making them very hard to track.  As a sector, however, microgrids are beginning to move into the mainstream, with a greater focus being placed on viable business models.  The result is a much more robust microgrid market than just a few years ago.  According to a new tracker report from Navigant Research, more than 480 microgrid projects are proposed, planned, under construction, or operating worldwide, representing nearly 3,800 megawatts (MW) of capacity

Nanotubes go superlubricous - 0 views

  • The finding, which proves once again that the phenomenon can appear on length scales much larger than previously thought, might help make improved micro- and nanodevices based on nanotubes in the future that do not suffer from friction.

Motors Drive The Move To Miniaturisation - 0 views

  • Miniature motors and micro-motors can be extremely versatile, and their cost today makes them very attractive for both miniaturisation and for enhancing products by adding new functionality. Jon Severn takes a look at what the latest evolutions of these products can offer design engineers.

Micro Persuasion: How to Data Mine Google Reader Feeds for Trends - 0 views

  • Google Reader - my favorite RSS application - recently added a powerful search functionality that has made me infinitely better at studying people and their social patterns. Using Google Reader you can now search an individual feed, tag or a folder and get back a total item count, all sorted by date for as long as you have been a subscriber to that feed. In my case, some of my feeds go back to October 2005 when the Reader first launched. That's a ton of data to mine for trends. Now that my reader shows a huge cache of posts, I am subscribing to tons more feeds, stuffing them into a folder solely for the purpose of data mining them. The site also has limited set of advanced search operators. One hopes they will add more. It's worth noting that I don't actually read these high volume feeds. Rather, I mark them all as read so they get logged in my feed database and can be searched for insights.

China - Copper section project in Guang'an - 0 views

  •
It was reported that Hefei Risheng Science and Technology Co. signed a contract with Guang'an Economic and Technology Development Zone to construct a 30ktpy copper profile project in Guang'an, Sichuan province. The project, which also consists of a 100ktpy aluminium profile business, will cost 470 million yuan and is expected to generate revenues of 3.2 billion yuan and profits of 500 million yuan. In addition, the company will collaborate with Sichuan Dongyang Housing Development Co. to build 20 production lines of single crystal copper bond wire and 20 production lines of micro electromagnetic wire in Guang'an. Total investment will amount to 500 million yuan.

New Method Used to Synthesize Cu-Based Nanocomposite - 0 views

  • In this research, we added silicon carbide powder of micro and nanoscales to copper by means of friction stir processing in order to reinforce its strength and resistance to surface erosion.
  • "It is possible to increase the strength base and resistance to erosion up to 3 times and 10 times respectively with respect to the material substance. It is also possible to give properties such as semi conduction or other physical properties to the desired material with regard to its application," he added, explaining about the results of the study.
