Japan - Furukawa Electric's magnet wire production recovers - 0 views

  •
Furukawa Electric has reported a recent improvement in its magnet wire production, and plans a monthly production in fiscal 2009 (ending March 2010) of 1,500 tonnes of enamelled wire and 85,000 km of triple insulated magnet wire; this is 70-75% (for enamelled wire) and 80-85% (for triple insulated magnet wire) of the peak levels produced in April-September 2008. Enamelled wire production could reach 1,700-1,800 tonnes per month in October 2009-March 2010. Furukawa Electric's domestic magnet wire production is being consolidated into its Mie Works in order to cut costs; production at its Hiratsuka Works will transfer to Mie within 2009.

China - Jinglong sets up enamelled wire project - 0 views

  •
Jinglong Electric Material Co. Ltd. has started a special type enamelled wire project in Tongling City, Anhui Province. The company was established in 2003, engaging in the production and sale of enamelled wire. Capacity was restricted to 10,000t per annum due to dispersed plants. But by consolidating operations, Jinglong will reach annual capacity of 25,000t, also meeting local copper demand. The new project occupies 53,000m2 whilst its investment amounts to 80M yuan (US$11.7M). It is anticipated that upon reaching full capacity, the company will realise annual revenues of 950M yuan (US$139M).

China - Furukawa Electric to produce copper wire in-house to strengthen export competit... - 0 views

  •
In late August, Furukawa Electric announced they would be raising prices for enamelled wire as they try to offset the rising cost of energy and varnish, particularly for polyvinal formal enamelled copper wire (PVF). According to Furukawa varnish and energy costs have increased 40% and 80% respectively since fiscal 2004. Sumitomo Electric, Hitachi Cable, Unimac and Totoku Electric have all also announced that they are either negotiating price rises on future shipments or conducting studies into a price increase. However, slowing demand for electric wire and electronic parts may make any further price hikes difficult. An industry source commented that, "makers could only get a higher price for PVF."

Chinese wire and cable producers restock before Chinese New Year - 0 views

  •
A recent survey by the Shanghai Metals Market of 21 major Chinese electrical wire and cable producers, with a total capacity of 990,000t/y, showed that operating rates in January decreased to 69.73%, down 6.86 percentage points from December. The survey cited a lull in major contracts for power cables prior to Chinese New Year as the reason for sluggish demand. However, stabilisation in the demand for enamelled wire was noted in January, whilst demand for electrical wire was estimated to have picked up. The SMM survey revealed that producer's inventories of raw materials had picked up prior to the Chinese New Year Holiday, with producer's raw materials holdings as a percentage of production up 9.46 percentage points since December, to 34.58%. The survey suggested easier cash flows and expectations of future copper price rises were reasons for the increase.

Germany - Aurubis produces 308,000t of copper products in Q2 2012, down by 4.6% y-o-y - 0 views

  •
Aurubis AG reported that its production of copper wirerod was down by 22% y-o-y and 14% q-o-q to reach 155,000t in Q2 2012, marking a faster decline from the 17% y-o-y fall in Q1 2012. The company said that the decrease in volumes was driven by slower demand from cable and enamelled wire producers. This came despite stronger demand from the automotive sector and signs of a pick-up in demand from the infrastructure sector in late Q2. Aurubis also produces copper and copper-alloy shapes, pre-rolled products, finished flat rolled products and speciality wire. Output of shapes fell by 25% y-o-y and 13% q-o-q to reach 41,000t in Q2, due to weak demand from semi-fabricators. However at Schwermetall, the company's 50%-owned subsidiary, production of pre-rolled strip decreased by only 5% y-o-y to reach 49,000t in Q2, as demand from semi-fabricators for this product held-up better. The year-on-year change in finished flat rolled products output was distorted by the acquisition of Luvata's rolled products division (RPD). However, volumes in the division did fall by 5% q-o-q reaching 57,000t in Q2, contributing towards across-the-board sequential declines for Aurubis' copper products output in Q2.

Kuwait - LS Cable & System wins $110M order - 0 views

  •
Kuwait - LS Cable & System wins $110M order LS Cable & System announced that it had secured a 400kV extra-high voltage cable project valued at $110 million (about KRW130 billion) from the Ministry of Electricity and Water of Kuwait. LS Cable & System said it will supply and install 400kV extra-high voltage conductor with insulated cables and connectors on a turnkey basis. LS Cable & System said that unlike ordinary extra-high voltage cable using pure copper for the conductor, the conductor with insulated cables to be installed will be a high-tech cable in which the strands of wire comprising the conductors are coated with enamel to reduce transmission resistance. This raises transmission capacity by more than 20%. When this type of conductor with insulated cable is used, the overall weight and thickness of the cable can be reduced, as much as the transmission resistance falls, greatly reducing the cost of cable manufacturing and power grid implementation.

Germany - Aurubis' copper products demand outlook: Asian demand will recover after Summ... - 0 views

  •
Aurubis AG, the Germany-headquartered refined copper cathode and copper products fabricator, reported a weak performance in sales of copper products in the first quarter of this year. In Q1, the outputs of wirerod; pre-rolled strip; continuous cast shapes; rolled products and speciality wire reached 179,000t, 41,000t, 47,000t and 60,000t, down by 17% y-o-y, down by 15% y-o-y, up by 2% y-o-y and up by 329% y-o-y, respectively. Generally, the seasonal upswing in Q2 was weaker than expected, however, there was a mixture of performances in the sectors within each market, as some wirerod market sectors ordered strongly but European semi-fabricators and customers of strip and speciality wire continued to order shrinking quantities at late notice.
  •
Aurubis reported a growth outlook for its copper products business unit. The company said that the performance of copper wirerod depends upon the progress of power grid expansion projects in Europe. The automotive sector is expected to continue to support growing wirerod sales for the next few months, however the enamelled wire industry is expected to remain weak attributed to poor demand in southern Europe. North American demand is anticipated to support growth in shipments of copper shapes as well as the company's market for flat copper products. In this regard, the US electronics and electrical industry, engine cooling and distribution segments are expected to continue improving. Stagnant European and Asian demand for flat copper products will partially undermine growth in North America. The company added that it does not anticipate the Asian copper products market to recover until the end of Summer 2012, at which time, demand in the US is expected to be good and demand from European-based operations will be recovering.

Aurubis says copper product demand remains strong - 0 views

  • European copper product demand is continuing its recovery especially for sales of rod, Aurubis , Europe's biggest copper smelter, said on Monday. "Demand for copper wire rod has picked up in Europe from the prior-year doldrums and the recovery is coming from all sectors," the company said in a report. "The enamelled wire industry's increased demand for rod is the result of good sales to producers of white goods," it said. "Demand from the automotive sector is also showing an uptrend." Sales for energy transmission and installation cable also picked up this spring, it said.
