Is the Vietnam Electricity Reform a Distant Reality? - 0 views

  •
"Vietnam is one of the few countries in the Southeast Asian region that has established regulatory bodies in the power sector. In 2004, the Electricity Reform Law was introduced to establish a competitive electricity market in the country. Reforms were initiated in 2012 and agencies such as the Directorate General of Energy (DGE) under the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT) and Electricity Regulatory Authority of Vietnam (ERAV) restricted the control and ownership of transmission grid and power generation of Vietnam Electricity (EVN)."

Helicopters enlisted to combat copper thieves - 0 views

  • Law-enforcement in the Australian city of Melbourne have availed themselves of infrared-equipped helicopters in an effort to combat rampant theft of copper cables. Fairfax reports that copper theft has become so problematic for the Melbourne metro system that it is impeding the satisfaction of punctuality targets. The Melbourne Metro saw a sharp surges in copper thefts last year, at 41 incidents in total compared to only 15 in 2011. That trend looks set to continue in 2013, with 12 incidents even before the end of January, affecting 30,000 commuters.

  •
Russia Copper Corp. (RCC), a Russia-based integrated producer of copper cathode and wirerod, said that there will be a steep rise in exports of copper cathode from 2015. The company expects Russia to cancel its 10% (variable on copper price) export duty on copper cathodes from 2015 as a prerequisite for its accession to the World Trade Organisation. RCC added that the cost incurred in producing wirerod is around $130/t and the average cost to send it abroad in Q1 2012 was $250/t, whereas the estimated cost of sending cathode abroad was $850/t in that period.

ECO-CYCOLOGY mentality is more than a just brand-led phenomenon; realizing its importance, various cities or states in US (San Diego, Seattle and San Francisco to name a few) have enacted their own mandatory recycling laws. Likewise, The European Parliament has voted for tougher regulations on the disposal of electronic trash, requiring each country to collect 4 kilos of e-waste per citizen by 2012, and to process 85% of all its electronic waste by 2016.

Only A Few Weeks Left For Motor OEMs Exporting To The US - 0 views

  • The act will replace the current EPAct legislation which has been in force since 1997 and covers low voltage, "General Purpose" 3-phase electric motors from 1-200HP (0.75 - 150 kW). It will enforce a rise in the minimum efficiency of these machines from NEMA Energy Efficient to NEMA Premium Efficient. The new law will go further as it also encompasses motors not previously within the EPAct scope. The result is that almost all low voltage, 3-phase electrical induction motors will be covered by this new legislation. It can be summarised as follows: - 1-200 HP General Purpose motors currently covered by EPAct will change from NEMA Energy Efficient to NEMA Premium Efficient. - 1-200 HP motors not covered in point 1 above will comply with NEMA Energy Efficient. - 201-500 HP motors will comply with NEMA Energy Efficient.

Japan - Japan Copper and Brass Association reported that Japanese rolled copper product... - 0 views

  •
The Japan Copper & Brass Association reported Japanese copper rolled product import fell by 2.5% y-o-y to 50,057t in the fiscal year ending March 2008. While volume of import was still high, it has fallen y-o-y the first time since the fiscal year ending March 2002. Copper tube import decreased by 19% y-o-y to 10,661t, partly due to the slowdown of new housing starts after the Japanese imposed new building standard law. Biggest importers to Japan are reported to be South Korea, China, Germany, Taiwan and North America.
  •
According to the Japan Copper and Brass Association, total production of copper and copper alloy semis fell by 4.1% y-o-y to 72,770t in July. Output also contracted by 0.5% m-o-m in July, a second consecutive monthly decline. The fall is attributed in large part to the struggling automotive sector, which has been strongly impacted by the 11th March disaster.
  •
Production for domestic shipments contracted by 6.6% y-o-y to reach 51,112t, whilst output for export markets fell more rapidly in January, reaching 8,898t after a 23.1% y-o-y decline (this however, was narrower than the December drop in exports of 30.7% y-o-y). Copper strip still represented the most heavily produced brass mill semi-fabricated product (27.7% of overall production in gross weight) but output decreased by 11.3% y-o-y, amounting to 16,600t in January. This was principally attributed to weak interconnector demand, the impact of the flooding in Thailand and the highly appreciated yen affecting the export market. Copper tube output decreased by 14.5% y-o-y to 9,750t in January, on weak demand from air conditioner manufacturers caused by bad weather and a slow world economy. Brass bar production fell by 7.7% y-o-y but rose by 900t since December to reach 14,206t in January. The change was attributed to improving demand from the domestic automotive and plumbing sectors.
