Cuba ends ban on DVD player, computer sales - Engadget - 0 views

  • the Cuban government is finally allowing general consumers to buy various electronics, including DVD players and computers, for the first time. Only companies and foreigners were previously able to buy computers, while the looming threat of terrible Hollywood movies had forced Cuban authorities to seize DVD players at the airport. The change is due to "the improved availability of electricity," and Cubans can look forward to also picking up microwaves, 24-inch televisions, and rice cookers to plug into the new juice. Of course, it's not all flip flops and high-fives: air conditioners will not be available until next year, and the deadly menace known as the toaster will be restricted until 2010.

The "Energy Plus" Building Produces All Its Own Power : MetaEfficient - 0 views

  • The “Energy Plus” office building, to be located outside of Paris, is designed to produce all its own energy for heating, lighting and air conditioning. This zero-energy building, according to the designers, will be the greenest office building ever created. It will accomplish this by having more solar panels on its roof than any other building - producing enough energy to power the entire building and still feed extra back into the grid.

Congressman attends UN climate conference in 3-D animation - Green Daily - 0 views

  • here is just one problem. How did these delegates, from around the world, get to the conference? For the most part, they flew over land and sea in airplanes. Airplanes are known to be one of the bigger offenders of CO2 emissions. The UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change estimates that air travel causes 3.5 percent of global warming. This could increase to 15 percent by 2050.When landed, some potentates traveled by gas-guzzling limousine.
  • addressed the conference in a 3-D animated avatar version of himself. In doing this, Markey saved an estimated 5.36 tons of CO2 emissions. Citizens from many different countries are reported to have attended the virtual Bali conference the same way Markey chose to attend.

Japan - Brass mill semis output rose to 70,669t in April, up by 3.1% m-o-m - 0 views

  •
The Japan Copper and Brass Association reported that copper semis production amounted to 70,699t in April, a rise of 3.1% m-o-m on a seasonally adjusted basis, and almost flat y-o-y. This was principally attributed to fabricators ramping up production after the government revoked its schedule of rolling power cuts which were employed in March following the earthquake. In addition to this, increased demand from the air conditioning sector and further anticipated power outages over the summer are likely to have supported producers' decisions to increase production in April.

Mexico - New copper commercial tube plant by Golden Dragon - 1 views

  •
Golden Dragon, based in China's Hunan province, opened a new copper tube plant in the city of Monclova, northern Mexico. The investment of the project amounted to US$100 million and represents the biggest Chinese investment ever made in Mexico. The plant covers 200,000m2 and will employ 900 staff. Currently, annual output capacity is 60,000t of copper tube for air conditioners but the plan is to raise that to 120,000t. The new project will benefit from low industrial costs and a competitive exchange rate; it aims to supply the North American and European markets.

Japan - Rolled Copper Products Experienced 3.7% y-o-y Drop in March - 0 views

  •
Japanese rolled copper product output fell by 3.7%y-o-y to 68,620t in March. This was mainly attributed to disruption to automotive supply chains following the March 11 disaster. The full impact of the decline of Japanese carmakers is expected to hit copper producers in the forthcoming months due to the expected two month time lag in copper demand. There is, however, optimism about the medium term demand outlook due to growing demand in air conditioner and housing utensil production in addition to the positive effects of the country's forthcoming rebuilding work. Company operations are expected to ramp up after factory repairs are anticipated to be completed towards the summer.
