Moonlight Controlled StreetLights | Got2BeGreen - 0 views

  • n some places, it isn’t necessary to have streetlights when the full moon is shining bright. Currently only a design idea, the Lunar-Resonant Street Light is a smart solution to areas that receive a decent amount of moonlight at night. This cool idea, senses the amount of light reflected by the moon and dims according to its moon phase. According to the designers, the lights used are highly efficient white-LED clusters which are 90 to 95 percent more energy efficient than standard street lights.

» Data trips between light and sound | Emerging Technology Trends | ZDNet.com - 0 views

  • As you probably are aware, future communications networks will certainly be based on optics. A research team led by Duke University physicists has done an important discovery which might lead to these future super-fast optical communications networks. The team has found a way to store information coming from a beam of light by converting it to sound waves. More importantly, it was able to retrieve it again as light waves. These reversible data transfers from light to sound are today limited to labs. Several years will pass before commercial companies can use this technique because there are still some technical issues to solve. But read more…

90,000 people now work there; arriving via car, Dockland Light Railway, on the Jubilee Line, or even by boat; which although an unusual way to commute is perhaps not so surprising as Canary Wharf is situated on the Isle of Dogs and surrounded by water on three sides.

» A light-powered toothbrush? | Emerging Technology Trends | ZDNet.com - 0 views

  • Would you like to use a light-powered toothbrush which needs no toothpaste and no batteries? It’s already available in Japan and North America and it costs about $30. Its rod contains titanium dioxide that generates a plaque-removing electrochemical reaction. This ’solar’ toothbrush of the future ‘works by releasing electrons that then react with the saliva in the mouth and help to breakdown plaque.’ It just needs some light — so you’ll be able to wash your teeth in your garden or on your balcony. And as it has no batteries, this is a very eco-friendly device. It is currently tested today by 120 students at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada, but it’s already available online.

Industrial Goods - Philips poor consumer sales - 0 views

  • The company blamed poor lighting sales on the anaemic construction industry in developed countries, and said its gross sales in lighting would grow in the low single digits. But production capacity is being severely underutilised due to low demand, mainly in western Europe. Margins in the company’s lighting division fell to some 4 per cent, well below the 10 per cent margin in the first quarter.Philips also said low consumer demand in western Europe had hit its consumer products revenues. It also noted some impact from the expected spin-off of its television division to Hong Kong-based TPV, which it announced in April. The company will report that the audio-visual and media section of its consumer products division has fallen into the red. An analyst said Philips officers had told him that the spin-off of the TV business had created customer and retailer uncertainty and led to falling TV sales, which also hurt knock-on sales of other audio-visual products.

Ultra-light, high performance electrical wiring, made from carbon instead of copper, ha... - 0 views

  • In the meantime, there are preparations for a large, multi-industrial project to start at the end of the year which will be an important intermediary step: a hybrid carbon-copper wire in which the carbon is dispersed throughout the copper, making the copper lighter and stronger, while further reducing transmission losses.
  • Ultra-light, high performance electrical wiring, made from carbon instead of copper, has been developed in a usable form for the first time.
