The U.S. Department of Homeland Security, however, has other ideas about what a resilient grid might look like. As part of its aptly named Resilient Electric Grid, or REG, project, DHS is giving $60 million to AMSC and Commonwealth Edison to install a high-temperature superconductor cable to increase the resilience of ComEd’s system in Chicago.

Significantly more efficient copper extraction with hydrogen peroxide - 0 views

"The use of hydrogen peroxide can solve an old mining problem while significantly increasing the amount of copper extracted from the ore. Certain impurities such as iron sulfides (which include pyrite) have been difficult to remove until now. A new technology based on hydrogen peroxide now offers a solution. Using a small copper and gold mine in Australia as an example, Evonik developers have demonstrated that the technology works on an industrial scale and can increase the copper yield by roughly ten percent."

Note that these coils could also be perfectly made out of copper, combining all the advantages of the new design with the advantages with copper. For bigger motors beyond pedelecs, such designs have been or are currently being developed (Copper Alliance worked in 2005-2010 with automotive OEMs in this area).
Why human health must be at the center of climate action - 2 views

There is a school of thought that climate is at the center of 'everything'. If we solve climate, we'll solve many other issues: not only health, but also growth, education, food, water, security, migration, ... Major thinkers such as Latour, Sloterdijk or Beck have written about this.
