OFFICIALS OF THE "She Has a Deal" annual hotel investment pitch contest announced the five teams selected to advance to the final round of SHaDPitch 2023. The competition allows early career women to compete for the prize of $50,000 of equity in SHaD's Prosperity Fund I, following the conclusion of a virtual, preliminary round of pitching, SHaD said in a statement. SHaD 2023 will be held at the new Marriott Headquarters in Bethesda, Maryland, on April 27 to 28. According to the statement, the goal of SHaD is to increase the number of women owning and developing hotels. It provides participants with the ability to source, analyse, raise capital and close hotel real estate investment deals. During the preliminary judging round, eight teams comprising 15 participants pitched their hotel investment acquisition or development projects live on Zoom to a judging panel of hotel business executives, entrepreneurs, and investors. The judges evaluated and selected the following five teams: Sydney Young and Rachel Nicholson with SpartanStone, graduates of Michigan State University, pitching a La Quinta Inn & Suites in Lewisville, Texas. Chandler Williamson with Chanders Core Commitment, graduate of North Carolina Central University, pitching a Hilton Garden Inn in Raleigh/Durham, North Carolina. Isabella Suffredini, Veronica Lewis and Alexandra Neoman with CROWN, graduates of Cornell University, pitching a TownePlace Suites in Houston, Texas. VIRDEE, THE CONTACTLESS check-in technology firm, secured $12.4 million in an oversubscribed Series A funding round led by Moneta Ventures, bringing its total funding to $21 million. These funds will be used to finance research, expand product features, grow the workforce, and strengthen the company's presence in the hospitality sector, the company said. Other participants in the latest fundraising process include Silverton Partners, Koch Real Estate Investments, Alumni Ventures, DJR Advisors, Capital Factory, and strategic partners, Virdee said. This investment follows Series Seed financing led by Silverton Partners in February 2022 and a 2020 angel investment led by Rajiv Trivedi, former brand president for Wyndham Hotels & Resorts Inc.'s La Quinta Inn and chairman of TST Capital.

HOSPITALITY SOFTWARE PROVIDER Canary Technologies recently closed a $50 million Series C funding round to research AI guest technology in the hospitality sector, bringing its total fundraising to nearly $100 million. The company's software includes mobile check-in and checkout, tablet registration, upsells, guest messaging, Canary AI and digital tipping. The recent investment round was led by global software investor Insight Partners, who also led the company's Series B, with participation from existing investors F-Prime Capital, Thayer Ventures, Y-Combinator and Commerce Ventures, Canary said in a statement. California-based Canary is led by CEO Harman Singh Narula and President SJ Sawhney. "AI is transforming the way we live, work and travel," said Narula. "Canary is at the forefront of delivering enterprise-grade hospitality AI solutions that empower hoteliers to streamline operations, boost efficiency and elevate the guest experience, This funding milestone is a reflection of the team's hard work and the immense impact that Canary is making for hoteliers, including many of the world's largest enterprise hotel brands. We continue to see significant demand in the market for our products and are excited to extend our partnership with existing investors."

ATLANTA-BASED BANYAN Investment Group has completed the sale of the 112-room Holiday Inn Express & Suites Bluffton at Hilton Head Area in South Carolina, to Trishul Hospitality, the company said. The transaction, for an undisclosed amount, generated a 24 percent internal rate of return and a 3.3x equity multiple for Banyan. "We purchased the Bluffton Holiday Inn Express & Suites back in 2014 with the idea that this South Carolina coastal submarket was poised for long term growth. We were confident Bluffton would evolve into a tourist destination, aided by its proximity to several year-round destinations such as Hilton Head Island, South Carolina; Savannah, Georgia; and Charleston, South Carolina," said Samir Yajnik, principal and EVP of investments, Banyan Investment Group. "Our underwriting and research at that time proved to be correct given Beaufort has become the fastest growing town in Beaufort County, South Carolina, with its population having grown by more than 124 percent in the last decade.

OYO, A HOSPITALITY technology company, is providing accommodation for approximately 150 differently-abled artisans and entrepreneurs participating in the ongoing Divya Kala Mela across India. The company identified more than 200 hotels in different cities, including Varanasi, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Patna, Surat, Nagpur, Ahmedabad, and Shimla. The selection of hotels is based on specific parameters, such as ramp and lift facilities mandated by the authorities, Oyo said in a statement. OYO recently collaborated with Khelo India Para Games 2023 in Delhi, offering accommodation to over 1500 participants in 45 hotels across the city, the statement added. Additionally, as part of its broader role as an event management agency, OYO handled catering and coordination for the games. Dedicated teams were deployed in various shifts to provide round-the-clock assistance to all participants.

SALEM, OREGON, RECENTLY changed its plan to use transient lodging tax funds for library funding gaps. AAHOA and the Oregon Restaurant & Lodging Association have been closely monitoring the municipality's attempts to divert the protected revenue from its intended purpose, promoting tourism. Instead, the city will use funds from the American Rescue Plan Act. Hotel taxes diverted from tourism could diminish funding for year-round visitor attraction efforts, AAHOA said in a statement. "AAHOA and ORLA were proactive in ensuring appropriate use of the transient lodging tax in the city of Salem," said Taran Patel, AAHOA's Northwest regional director. "This is a great example of the importance of AAHOA members being active in advocacy at the local levels of government."

INDIA-BASED ORAVEL STAYS, the parent company of OYO, is reportedly in talks to raise $200 million in a primary funding round, according to Business Standard. The funds are expected to support OYO's potential acquisition of G6 Hospitality, which owns the budget Motel 6 and Studio 6 chains in the U.S. Oravel Stays aims for a valuation between $4.5 billion and $5 billion, up from its previous $2.4 billion valuation, though still below its earlier $10 billion target. The company is in discussions with offshore institutional and private Indian investors to secure the funding, Business Standard reported. Among the private investors involved are InCred Wealth, J&A Partners, the Mankind Pharma family office, and ASK Financial Holdings, all of whom previously valued OYO at $2.4 billion. OYO, backed by SoftBank, has not commented on the matter.

DALLAS LEADS THE nation's hotel construction pipeline with 204 projects totaling 23,669 rooms, according to Lodging Econometrics. Atlanta follows with 168 projects and 19,431 rooms. Nashville and Phoenix each report 130 projects with 17,029 and 16,824 rooms, respectively. The Inland Empire rounds out the top five with 122 projects and 12,234 rooms, according to LE's latest U.S. Construction Pipeline Trend Report. New York City leads the under-construction pipeline with 36 projects and 5,928 rooms, followed by Phoenix with 31 projects and 4,788 rooms. Dallas has 31 projects with 3,467 rooms, Atlanta 27 projects with 3,211 rooms, and the Inland Empire 19 projects with 1,962 rooms.
