    Municipal wireless network ( Municipal Wi-Fi, Muni Wi-Fi or Muni-Fi) is the concept of turning an entire city into a Wireless Access Zone, with the ultimate goal of making wireless access to the Internet a universal service. This is usually done by providing municipal broadband via Wi-Fi to large parts or all of a municipal area by deploying a wireless mesh network.

  • Despite technology companies striving to hire women software developers, only one out of every six developers are female, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
  • Women can go to the site and begin designing their playbook with “To-Do” items, tracking weekly accomplishments, building a personal brand, searching for advisers and coaches, and taking advantage of career-boosting services. “Our goal is to knit all that together and essentially path you because it is overwhelming. Woman want the relevant information in their busy lives that [they] can action on,” Skeete Tatum noted. She also added that women need to build a “Board” of coaches, mentors and sponsors to guide them through career choices. She described coaches as high-power experts that provide insight and recognize patterns that move people forward; mentors as individuals who influence and help examine idead; and sponsors as the door openers and network builders.

  • Catfishing schemes, or romance scams, continue to plague social networking services. In fact, the issue has become so common that there’s a good chance that one of your recent “friend” requests actually came from a scammer versus someone who is actually interesting in pursuing a genuine friendship. Unfortunately, social networks on the whole seem content to turn a blind eye on the problem, despite the fact that people lose thousands of dollars to these types of scams every day.

    In reading about some of the negative sides of using technology, I related to this guys blog about scams, hackers, and catfishers. I've had many experiences like this. He was also able to give fair warnings to educators about some common things they might face when teaching their kids technological tools.

  • One of the key issues is teaching kids offline before they jump into an online world. They need to know the harsh realities of a networked world, to discern between their real offline personality and tailored online personality, and to understand that both personalities should be the same.
  • They still need to know how to play nicely together, share, not tease or say hurtful things -- and they need to transfer these offline skills to a digital space as well.

  • Have students create something on a large easel paper (a drawing, poem, short sentence, etc.). Once completed, ask them walk around the room as if they were in a museum and make comments on each creation. This is a great way of having students comment in public and provide authentic feedback that is constructive and not hurtful.
  • Generate safe usernames Discuss the difference between personal and private information Explain why there are logins and passwords for some hardware, software and websites Describe why stealing information and other people's creations is the same as stealing tangible items Use technology to explore personal interests Demonstrate to others how to use technology tools in ways that assist rather than prevent learning
