This document presents general practices of safe school construction and the retrofitting of existing school buildings through typical design and drawing of schools as developed and practised in Aceh and West Sumtra Earthquake Response programmes. The programmes aim to create greater awareness of safer school construction in new schools, while at the same time making sure that the existing school buildings are safe.

Dadaab - A mix of cultural practices, such as early and forced marriage, as well as child labour, are depriving girls of education in the Dadaab refugee complex in eastern Kenya. Out of Dadaab's estimated population of 463,000 mainly Somali refugees, more than half are children under 18; of these about 38 percent attend school. The proportion of girls in the camps' primary and secondary schools is 38 and 27 percent, respectively, according to the UN Refugee Agency. A third of girls aged between 5 and 13 in Dabaab go to school; for those aged 14 to 17, only one in 20 are enrolled.

ALLAHABAD: The National council of teacher education (NCTE) has taken an initiative to reform and revamp teaching education system in the country. Following the implementation of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education-2009, the government is now gearing up to reform the teaching education system with an aim to improve the quality of procedures and practices. Following the exercise, all courses of teacher education like BEd, MEd, NTT (Nursery Teachers Training), BPEd and MPEd will get revised.

As India celebrated Akshaya Tritiya on Tuesday, a festival associated with mass weddings, many activists renewed their calls against child marriage. "Raise your voice against child marriage on #AkshayTritiya, an auspicious day for Hindu marriage in India," UNICEF India said on Twitter. There are many campaigns around the world against child marriage in India, where the practice remains common despite being illegal. The All India Disaster Mitigation Institute (AIDMI), Ahmedabad, India, is a community-based action research and action advocacy organisation which has been working towards bridging the gap between policy, practice and research in disaster management since 1995. AIDMI's mission is to reduce the vulnerability of poor communities by increasing mitigation efforts, through learning and action, to ensure water, habitat, food, work and human security. The organisation operates locally but also maintains an active international presence.

Education in emergencies (EiE) is both a research "field in its infancy" and a rapidly "emerging  field" (Tomlinson & Benefield, 2005). This scoping study reviews a wide range of academic  articles and grey literature in the education in emergencies field to map current and past research  methodologies used by academics and practitioners. It identifies the unique successes and gaps in  the evidence base in order to support future academics and practitioners in conducting and  documenting research. This study concludes that ensuring sound ethical and rigorous reflective  research practices is critical to fill research gaps and to move EiE from infancy to a welldeveloped, reputable research field.

Teacher training in Ontario will be bumped up to two years starting in 2014, says the provincial government. The Liberals, who promised the move during the 2011 election campaign, began consultations with education groups on Wednesday about the change. Three to four additional sessions are planned for April and May. Teachers typically earn a four-year undergraduate degree and then spend another year at university completing their bachelor of education. (Ten of the 13 universities with education programs also offer the degrees concurrently so students can complete the two at the same time.) The Liberals have said more training is needed given the challenges and increasing demands teachers face. The expanded program, the details of which have yet to be finalized, will include more practical, in-class training for new teachers.

Purpose/Objective/Research Question/Focus: The intent of this work is to describe various ways in which students' ready engagement in, and quick learning when playing, electronic games have been assumed to provide useful guidance to educators. This goal is pursued by means of analysis of the relevant research and the prescriptions for classroom teaching and learning that have emerged it. Close critical examination of these attempts to infer educational practices from electronic gaming yields three general strategies that have been pursued. The focus of this study has been on evaluating the relative value of these three general strategies.
