Why America's obsession with STEM education is dangerous - The Washington Post - 14 views

  •
"No matter how strong your math and science skills are, you still need to know how to learn, think and even write. Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon (and the owner of this newspaper), insists that his senior executives write memos, often as long as six printed pages, and begins senior-management meetings with a period of quiet time, sometimes as long as 30 minutes, while everyone reads the "narratives" to themselves and makes notes on them. In an interview with Fortune's Adam Lashinsky, Bezos said: "Full sentences are harder to write. They have verbs. The paragraphs have topic sentences. There is no way to write a six-page, narratively structured memo and not have clear thinking.""

  •
7 points of information literacy: * IL as context specific and context sensitive; * IL demanding a variety of behaviours: not just searching, but also encountering, browsing, monitoring, managing and creating; * People moving along complex paths to meet their information needs: moving between the virtual and physical worlds, and using different sources and spaces; * IL in digital environments; * IL with people sources; * People being information literate individually and collaboratively * People being aware they are information literate: you cannot be an information literate 21st Century citizen without being conscious of the need to develop these IL skills and attitudes, and continue to update your IL through your life! Excellent article.

Looking for eResources that don't break the library budget? - 29 views

  •
"At the recent Excellence in Learning Resources forum meeting in York we had a good discussion about the various eCollections libraries across the Yorkshire & Humber region currently provide for their learners. With so many libraries facing serious cutbacks, providing good quality eResources that don't put too much of a dent in the library budget is as important as ever."

IDroo Whiteboard for Skype - 0 views

  •
"What it is: IDroo is an educational multi user whiteboard that lets students instantly collaborate online.  Everything that is drawn or written on the whiteboard is visible to all participants in real-time.  IDroo supports an unlimited number of meeting participants, the only limitations are computer power and internet connection speed.  There is a professional math typing tool built-in making it easy to teach or work through math problems collaboratively. Best of all, IDroo can be used with Skype! IDroo is free for non-commercial use. Now for the downfall (and this is a HUGE downfall in my humble opinion), IDroo is currently only available for Windows.  I  know, disappointment for us Mac lovers. *sigh*  If you are using a Windows computer this is a great way to collaborate online! How to integrate IDroo into the classroom: IDroo would be a great app for collaborating with other classrooms around the world.  Students can use the multi user whiteboard space to work together, share ideas, and brainstorm.  IDroo would also be fantastic as a way for teachers to tutor students virtually.  Set up an "open lab" time once a week online where students can drop in and get extra help.  Virtual lab times are especially helpful for elementary students who can't dictate their own schedules and often can't stay after school for extra help. Tips: Don't forget to allow IDroo to access Skype API after you download!" iLearn Technology

"Algorithms choose which students sit together. Algorithms measure what the children know and how well they know it. They choose what problems the children should work on and provide teachers with the next lesson to teach. This combination of human capital and technology is called "blended learning."

BFTP: So just what SHOULD librarians be teaching? - Home - Doug Johnson's Blue Skunk Blog - 0 views

  • reading bubble will be larger in schools with a large percentage of students who are not testing at grade leve
  • library media programs have intrinsic reading motivation and free volunteer reading as their core contributions to a school's reading program
  • providing and promoting high interest materials at a variety of reading levels that meet a variety of developmental needs, we will create kids who not only can read by want to read.
  • ...6 more annotations...
  • in schools where there is no separate "technology integration specialist" available to students and teachers. This is also more prevelant at the secondary level.
  • An increasing number of schools seem to be emphasising technology as a focus
  • teach the educational application of technology tools, not just the applications themselves
  • our programs acknowledge our roles as reading and tech teachers, but we empahsis the application of these skills in an IL model that helps solve real problems and answer genuine questions.
  • the larger the information literacy bubble, the more opportunity library media specialists and teacher will have to address these areas both formally and informally
  • The best library program is the one that best supports the needs and goals of its school. It doesn't get much simpler than that.
