Librarydoor: Common Core Carpe Diem! - 32 views

  •
This webinar gave an overview of the reading, research, and rigor components that librarians can "assist" teachers with. If you wrap your head around these critical shifts, and you will likely become as building leaders as you model solutions for meeting the CCSS. Teachers all over are trying to figure this out and this is a piece of cake for us! Carpe Diem! Wrap your head around Inquiry and Student Centered research projects. (Writing standards 6-10) Help "repackage" research units Help find "rigor" - Rich Text - reading passages, correctly aligned to the CCSS Lexile bands. Understand what it means to "read closely" - with purpose, meaningful, directed, points of view, etc. Understand what a Lexile is and its role in the CCSS Help teachers replace lower level texts (Lexile) with alternatives correctly Lexiled, or Non-fiction Inquiry Units using your non-fiction collection!

You'll notice the pages of this wiki (on the left hand side) are the Common Core Standards. We have attempted to align iPad apps with each standard. There will be overlap - one app may meet more than one standard. Please leave comments, suggest apps, or share your experiences in the discussion tab of the appropriate page.

School Library Monthly - ALA Presidential Task Force: Focus on School Libraries - 18 views

  •
"It was the best times, it was the worst of times…." This famous observation by Charles Dickens is certainly applicable to the current status of school library programs and school librarians. On the one hand, some programs are valued and receive ongoing support from their communities. Led by competent, effective school librarians, programs such as those recognized as meeting the criteria of the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) National School Library Program of the Year Award, provide solid evidence of the positive impact of best practice on teaching and learning. On the other hand, the economic downturn, often combined with a lack of understanding or value for how school librarians and library programs contribute to student achievement, has led other communities to eliminate positions and to cut back, curtail, or get rid of once thriving programs.

"My biggest tip for surviving group tasks is to appoint a group leader, just one, who will evenly distribute tasks. Aim to meet as a group face to face at least once a week for a minimum one hour, allowing for ideas and concepts to flow between the group without the restrictions and limitations of the online world."

"Although most students have always included college education into their plans for future, they are still not prepared for the application process when it becomes part of their reality. Admissions boards consider many factors when they form the list of admitted candidates, so it's difficult for you to understand how to meet their expectations. "
