Why We Need School Libraries | Diane Ravitch's blog - 11 views

  • When we defund a school’s library, we dismantle the very capacity of the school to conduct its mission. Exterminating librarians defeats the purpose of school itself. When the librarian leaves and the library is starved, we lose our very access to the sustenance of learning and knowledge.
  •
And this is the true function of a library: it provides an atmosphere where ideas can be suspended long enough to permit rearrangement. Libraries are the petrie dish of intellect and the information stored there provides the agar of learning. But students themselves muster the work necessary to grow understanding.

Keeping Public School Libraries Relevant - 13 views

  •
"Public school libraries have always served an admirable purpose in education. In an indirect way, K-12 libraries have given students support in learning endeavors and been a go-to spot for information. With that being said, as the first Internet-generation rises through the public school ranks, libraries need big changes to remain relevant. It is not enough to simply "be there;" school libraries need to reach out to students and pull them in with helpful resources that combine traditional and contemporary theories in literacy."

School Library 2.0 - 5/1/2006 - School Library Journal - 0 views

  • interface that would allow students to build a virtual collection of their favorite books by letting them copy a record to display on their “bookshelf.
  • use blogs and podcasts to facilitate book discussions and booktalks.
  • You can further stimulate a dialogue by establishing a “Book Talk” program through voicemail.
  • ...10 more annotations...
  • So set up a special “Book Talk” phone number so students can submit their contributions from their cellphones
  • “Library Powered”
  • Interactive technologies have already galvanized the greater library community
  • The digitally re-shifted library will end the argument over flex vs. fixed scheduling once and for all by shifting to a new model.
  • The library is still functioning as the “Intel Inside,” but that doesn’t have to mean “In Your Presence.”
  • How else can libraries harness the power of 2.0 to provide services wherever and whenever they are needed?

What Kids Are Reading In School and Out - 16 views

  •
"Walk into any bookstore or library, and you'll find shelves and shelves of hugely popular novels and book series for kids. But research shows that as young readers get older, they are not moving to more complex books. High-schoolers are reading books written for younger kids, and teachers aren't assigning difficult classics as much as they once did."

ArchivesInfo: What is Information? Teaching Information Skills to High School Students - 39 views

  • On a path to boost student research skills, I have been working with freshmen English teachers and administration to  evaluate the research skills of incoming freshmen. This past week, we had all freshmen classes take an assessment that is considered a standard in this area. (The test shall remain nameless.) Its focus is on particular research skills. It asks questions about things such as Boolean searching, MLA format, etc. etc. I immediately follow the test by teaching a class about information during the second half of the period.

What does a school library look like in the digital age? | Teacher Network | Guardian P... - 0 views

  • What interests me is not just the explosion of the printed word but the inspirational library spaces created to curate them.
  • As a space, it is about inspiring young people.
  • The senior school library continues the journey. Here we aim to combine the power of the story with a concept premised on the Cabinet of Curiosities. Curiosity in its purest sense where a student's learning is entirely unrelated to examination specifications and is encouraging learning for its own sake. The first cabinet being mooted relates to an evening next term where the films of Charlie Chaplin will provide both entertainment and a cultural reference point. Our Curator of the Cabinet of Curiosities is tasked with supporting this with the curation of a range of objects which will stimulate interest and encourage inquiry. Our approach is unashamedly about inspiring a love of learning.
