we have to start somewhere. the Bechdel system might not be ideal, but it is working towards integrating gender into cinema. real cultural change would take decades but at least this new rating system would start the dialogue in Hollywood.
What they published really was happening. Isn't our job as a journalist to tell the truth? To expose the wrongs of the powerful? the journalists were just doing their jobs by publishing the information. the government is upset that the information was leaked because they knew it was wrong and that the people would have a fit. its our job as journalists to expose the unethical engagements of our governments. are we not better off knowing what our government is doing in our name?
i found this article to be an intriguing perspective on prom night. as one of our historical national "coming of age" gantlets its important to understand how it is effecting our youth. Do you agree/ disagree with the authors stance? how is it effecting tam students?
Perhaps opinion does have a place in the news. Disguising opinion as fact is worse than blatant opinionated statements. Without the impartiality rules that surround journalism writers would have the freedom to take a side, to write freely without constantly checking over their shoulder or fretting that perhaps their opinion is too exposed in the article. All writing comes from the perspective of the writer. It is ridiculous to think that the opinion of the writer can be stifled; it can be limited by adhering to the strict rules of journalism. But I would rather have the opinion of the writer be up front so that I can decide if I agree with their premise or not. It would require more effort from the reader, to determine their own opinion separate from the authors. However this system would require the reader to visit multiple sources with different viewpoints. It is more challenging for the reader but it would promote the questioning of our own opinions and ideas.
I mean in any sport, there is always going to be a superstar athlete that takes the spotlight and that is just apart of sports. As an athlete you learn to deal with it. This article was supposed to be covering sports, however it really just seamed like the author used the bark to rip on Boussina. I would be interested in finding out if the author had any internal motive writing this. It focused mainly on Boussina's attitude rather than his credit as a ball player. The quotes contexts were manipulated. I find it shocking that it would be published. It is sloppy journalism.
This article offered a new perspective on the controversy of performance enhancing drugs. It is definitely and opinion piece, but it does present a constructive ethics argument against the use of PEDs. As an athlete it offered valid insight to the culture of sports and the meaning behind competition. What are PED place in our daily lives? What is the place of ethics in sports? Is it about the "show" or the integrity of sport?
