This is very sad. I have a strong feeling that if 14 year old girl was having relations with an 18 year old boy, there would be no problem. This thing happens ALL THE TIME. The fact that this 18 year old girl's life may be ruined because of another frustrated, homophobic father is sickening. I think that the 18 year old girl does not deserve any prosecution whatsoever. As far as the petition, I think that it will help point out to both the father who is pressing charges and the judge that the father is not mad because of the age difference, but because of the homosexuality factor.
It's obvious that the father is only pressing charges because she is a girl. It's terrifying to think this poor girl could have this follow her for the rest of her life and could be forced to register as a sex offender. I do think that 18 and 14 is a pretty big age gap no matter what genders the teenagers are, but it's obvious that the real issue is that these girls are lesbian, not that they are so different in age. I hope that the petition will help and the the judge will listen. It's so sad that prejudiced people can affect someone's lifelike this just because they have narrow-minded views.
I agree with Daniel and Veronica. It is very obvious that the father is only so angry and involved because it is two females. I don't think Hunt deserves all the hate and legally trouble she is getting.I think that the petition is very good and the fact that it is getting around so much is really good. I hope the court and it and it helps them see that the father of the 14 year old i just upset because of the same sex factor.
As long as the 14 year old had mutual feelings to the 18 year old, I agree with everyone above me. The homophobic father really frustrates me and he is just going to have to get over it and realize that his daughters sexuality is not a choice. He also needs to realize that making this girl a registered sex offender will not change his daughters sexuality. At some point she will find another girlfriend and he will have to just accept it.
Well, this does happen to people of all genders and sexuality and it's wrong, what ever it takes to make ti clear that consent is consent is consent, and this is not only wrong, but demeans the younger person.
I agree with Daniel and Veronica and believe that because it was a lesbian relationship the police and parents got out of control. In the article it says the 14 year olds parents went to the police after finding out about the relationship. Who would do that? If you have a problem talk to your kid or at least to the other parents. But to go straight to the police without knowing all of the details, that just makes them look like homophobic parents.
I have to agree with Veronica and CJ. I agree this is an unfortunate circumstance and generally this happens all the time and nobody cares, but this is a pretty big age gap. Yes, the father probably did it out of homophobia which is - don't get me wrong - is totally wrong. However, the girl should have realized the risk of having a sexual relationship with a freshman/8th grader.
We've all known people who have been in relationships with people 3 or 4 years older or younger, and while people might think its weird, no one would go to the point of going to court about it. I'm also sure that they are very many fathers out there who would press charges against their daughter for having a sexual relation with someone 4 years older, whether it be a male or female, so you can't blame the father for being over protective. While i do think that this is a very harsh crime, i have a feeling people wouldnt be as angry about it if it was a 18 year old male getting arrested.
I agree with Daniel and Veronica. I think that the punishment is out of hand and the fact that it is a same sex relationship is most likely the reason for the father flipping out. I think that the parents of the eighteen year old are handling this very well. Clearly they are getting a lot of support from the outside world which can only help them in the future. I also think that withholding their decision to agree with the plea is impressive and shows that they really support their daughter and want the best for her. I think the parents of the fourteen year old should take a page out of their book.
The tough part about this is the fact that although the two did have a consensual relationship the law still states that an 18 year old and a 12-16 year old can not have a sexual relationship. I do agree with the above comments that the case was brought to the attention of officials because the parents of the 14 year old were against the same-sex relationship their daughter was in, and that I do not think is fair, however the 18 year old did break the law. I think the Facebook page is getting the case a lot of attention and making people more aware of what is happening, but I don't think it will help Hunt out if she goes to court because even though she has supporters it does not change the law she broke. Not that I think it is fair for her to face such a large punishment, I simply think it's inevitable for her now to pay some price.
