Delphi Aluminum Cable: The Right, Light Choice for Automotive Primary, Intermediate and... - 0 views

  • With copper costs continuing to rise, Delphi Automotive is introducing an Aluminum Cable that performs comparably to traditional copper core cable without the added cost. The technology, which is also lighter than copper cable, is now in production and will be introduced on 2012 model year vehicles.

Advanced stop start system - 0 views

  •
"Controlled Power Technologies' breakthrough in the development of a second generation stop-start system, which outperforms existing designs of modified starter motors and alternators in almost every respect, is being demonstrated to engineers and automotive experts this week at Europe's largest conference for vehicle electronics, which is held every two years at Baden-Baden in Germany. The production-ready SpeedStart system is an advanced solution that is more powerful, more efficient and more usable than first generation stop-start systems. It's the first design to integrate all the power and control electronics into a single electric motor assembly and by maximising the number of stop-start events the system aims to significantly reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions beyond the NEDC (New European Drive Cycle) measured minimum."

Electrical, auto sectors to drive aluminium use - 0 views

  • The electrical sector contributes the highest with 36 per cent, while the automotive and construction sectors share 22 per cent and 10 per cent, respectively, an ICRA report said
  • Most importantly, replacement of steel and copper by aluminium in the automobile and power transmission sectors, respectively, is likely to support the aluminium demand.
  • Being a good conductor of electricity, aluminium has been gradually replacing copper in the power transmission sector. Given the same weight of the metal aluminium is twice as good in electrical conductivity when compared to copper.

Lightweighting is an increasingly important objective for auto manufacturers. Every gram of weight saved reduces CO2 emissions and thus makes the vehicles eco-friendlier. To meet these requirements, ThyssenKrupp Nirosta has developed an innovative solution using ThyssenKrupp Tailored Strips, which comprise strips of different thickness matched exactly to the stresses acting on the part. For the first time, this new technology is now being used in a stainless steel production part - a rear muffler made by automotive supplier Eberspächer for the new BMW 730d in the diesel version.

BMW aims to make power systems breakthrough - 0 views

  • It could be out with copper and in with aluminium if BMW has its way. Scientists from the Technische Universitat Munchen (TUM) are teaming with engineers from BMW in an effort to replace copper with aluminium as a conductor in on-board power systems. Copper is heavy and expensive when compared to aluminium and with electric power becoming increasingly important, a switch to a cheaper option is preferred.

Researchers aim to replace copper with aluminum as a conductor in auto power systems --... - 0 views

  • If all goes according to plan, TUM's Professor Udo Lindemann (not to be confused with Udo Dirkschneider, the diminutive frontman of German heavy metal bands Accept and U.D.O.) predicts that "the high-voltage on-board systems of most electric vehicles to be based on aluminum by 2020."

LEONI offers solid aluminium conductor for the motor vehicle battery cable - 0 views

  • Leoni, the leading provider of cables and cable systems to the automotive sector and other industries, now offers a solid aluminium conductor for the motor vehicle industry to wire the battery as an alternative to the common copper cable. It can be shaped in three dimensions and weighs only about half as much as the conventional component. Leoni will present this product for the first time at the IAA International Motor Show in Frankfurt, together with other lightweight construction solutions.

Aluminum Development in Wire Harness - 0 views

  • Some of the issues the team is addressing are related to the way aluminum behaves over time. For example, as a TUM press release states, aluminum has a tendency to creep particularly at high pressure, meaning connectors would loosen over time. Even at lower temperatures, a paper by Austin Weber in Assembly Magazine explains that aluminum will flow when placed under constant pressure, so even if secured under twice the crimping pressure of copper, in time it will become loose as the metal flows from the pressure points.
