Electrical, auto sectors to drive aluminium use - 0 views

  • The electrical sector contributes the highest with 36 per cent, while the automotive and construction sectors share 22 per cent and 10 per cent, respectively, an ICRA report said
  • Most importantly, replacement of steel and copper by aluminium in the automobile and power transmission sectors, respectively, is likely to support the aluminium demand.
  • Being a good conductor of electricity, aluminium has been gradually replacing copper in the power transmission sector. Given the same weight of the metal aluminium is twice as good in electrical conductivity when compared to copper.

The Cable Directory - Nexans sees limited scope for copper substitution - 0 views

  • Record prices for copper will not lead to large-scale use of cheaper alternatives by industrial consumers because copper retains clear technical advantages in wiring, French cable group Nexans (NEXS.PA: Quote) said on Wednesday. Benchmark copper prices CMCU3 on the London Metal Exchange breached the $10,000 mark for the first time last month after a rally driven by Chinese demand and tightening global supply. This has led some manufacturers and distributors to warn of a shift towards less expensive substitute materials like aluminium and zinc, while in France a surge in copper theft has led rail and power firms to consider alternatives. [ID:nLDE71E1Q1] [ID:nLDE6BF1HO] Nexans was increasingly using aluminium conductors and developing other alternatives but did not see a big shift away from copper, Chief Financial Officer Frederic Michelland said. "If you reasoned in purely financial terms, copper would have been abandoned a long while back in favour of aluminium," he told reporters at the group's head office. "Overall, copper still has a fundamental attractiveness that should last for some time to come." Substitution had remained limited in the past few years, representing between 450,000 and 600,000 tonnes annually compared with a global market of some 19 million tonnes of refined copper, Nexans executives said at a briefing on copper. Aluminium had claimed the largest share among copper substitutes and Nexans was notably developing use of copper-clad aluminium as a product that resolved some of the conductivity snags of aluminium. However, the cost advantage was not enormous and there were still technical drawbacks, Michelland said. "There is not yet a miracle (substitute) product," he said. Nexans, which supplies cables for sectors like energy, construction and construction, is one of the world's largest private consumers of copper, having used around 450,000 tonnes of the metal in 2010.

Techical Performance of Traction Machine Design | Engineer Story - 0 views

  • An electric motor converts electrical energy into kinetic energy. The reverse task, that of converting kinetic energy into electrical energy, is accomplished by a generator or dynamo. In many cases the two devices differ only in their application and minor construction details, and some applications use a single device to fill both roles. For example, traction motors used on locomotives often perform both tasks if the locomotive is equipped with dynamic brakes.

LEONI offers solid aluminium conductor for the motor vehicle battery cable - 0 views

  • Leoni, the leading provider of cables and cable systems to the automotive sector and other industries, now offers a solid aluminium conductor for the motor vehicle industry to wire the battery as an alternative to the common copper cable. It can be shaped in three dimensions and weighs only about half as much as the conventional component. Leoni will present this product for the first time at the IAA International Motor Show in Frankfurt, together with other lightweight construction solutions.

How Safe is Aluminum wire? - 0 views

  •
How Safe is Aluminum wire?... Aluminum wire is still approved by the N.E.C. But this on the assumption that everything will be done perfect. Having said that i would like to give a little advice on using aluminum wire when you are building a new home. For the sake of saving a few dollars, it is not worth the safety hazard you face when using this wire. This is not only my opinion but the opinion of many others in the trade. Many times i have been called to repair corroded connections using this wire. Most of the time the aluminum wire had to be replaced with copper. One other piece of advice, before you consider buying a home with aluminum wire you might want to check with the insurance company. Some of them may refuse to insure a house with aluminum wire.

Superconducting electric cable could slash grid energy losses - 0 views

  • The 30-metre cable, as well as the terminals to connect it to a network, was constructed using a high-temperature superconducting material called BSCCO. The team that developed it says it’s the most advanced electric cable yet built in terms of its distribution capacity: it can transport five times more electrical strength than a conventional copper cable of the same dimensions.
