Understanding home modifications impact on clients and their family's experience of hom... - 0 views

Home modifications aim to enhance safety and occupational performance in the home. However, given the complexity and unique meaning of the home, they can impact aspects other than function. This qualitative descriptive study aimed to explore the impact of home modifications on clients and their family's experience of home. The study found that home modifications impacted positively and negatively on five dimensions of the home environment, the personal, occupational, physical, temporal and social dimension. The outcomes of the modifications and the home modification process were influenced by three themes, workmanship, consultation or involvement in decision-making, and the societal dimension of the home environment. Conclusions: The negative outcomes and poor consultation experiences suggest the need for occupational therapists to understand their client's personal experience of home and to comprehensively follow-up and evaluate these following home modifications.

Pilot study of a parent training program for young children with autism - 0 views

  •
The school that I am currently placed at is in the process of becoming the first PLAY Project certified and trained school. The PLAY Project Home Consultation (PPHC) program trains parents of children with autistic spectrum disorders using the DIR/Floortime model of Stanley Greenspan MD. Sixty-eight children completed the 8-12 month program. Pre/post ratings of videotapes by blind raters using the Functional Emotional Assessment Scale (FEAS) showed significant increases in child subscale scores. Translated clinically, 45.5 percent of children made good to very good functional developmental progress. There were no significant differences between parents in the FEAS subscale scores at either pre-or post-intervention and all parents scored at levels suggesting they would be effective in working with their children. Overall satisfaction with PPHC was 90 percent. Average cost of intervention was $2500/ year. Despite important limitations, this pilot study of The PLAY Project Home Consulting model suggests that the model has potential to be a cost-effective intervention for young children with autism.

SUPERVISION OF ASSOCIATED HEALTH TRAINEES- VA Handbook - 0 views

  •
This exert is specifically from the VA handbook in regards to supervision specifically for health professionals and trainees. This resource provides a strict breakdown of the supervision requirements for supervisors and trainees. It is clear through this policy that strict guidelines are to be followed within this system and this is what I have experienced in my time there. I was intrigued however, that supervisory roles are seen as an educational experience. The following tenet was the first under supervisor regulation--" Supervision is an educational experience provided by a qualified supervising practitioner with a trainee. This relationship is evaluative, extends over time, and has the simultaneous purposes of enhancing the professional functioning of the trainee while monitoring the quality of services delivered. Supervision is provided through observation, consultation, directing the learning and activities of the trainee, and role modeling". I feel that this really stressing the educational importance of being a supervisor.

Long-Term Care of the Aged: Ethical Dilemmas and Solutions - 0 views

  •
This article examines ethical issues in long-term care. One key component of solving ethical issues in long-term care settings is continually reexamining the beliefs and assumptions of the elderly in this setting and how occupational therapy services will affect them. One area that we must consider to make ethical decisions is the changes in medical technology and the demographics of the residents in these long-term care settings. The next point the article discusses is the concept of autonomy and how the current autonomy paradigm is poorly suited to guide occupational therapy's decisions regarding older adults in long-term care. The concepts of autonomy inadequately describe the realities of aging populations according to this article. The third concept is to create a new approach of autonomy by consulting the individual and taking into account the elderly's freedoms while they are residing in long-term care facilities. Another model that must be incorporated into developing ethical guidelines for long-term care settings is the partnership model, which states that family and important resources should be included in the daily living activities and critical health care decisions of the residents. Approaching occupational therapy with these concepts in mind will allow for better quality of care and increased ethical guidance.

I found this ten-step process for resolving ethical issues in the school from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. I thought this was a really nice guide and one that can be used by OT's as we look to our Code of Ethics.
