Michael mcsheehan presented at low incidence forum The IOD's research team is a multi-disciplinary group with backgrounds in education, autism, early childhood, employment, sustainable transportation, public policy, aging and long term care, positive behavioral supports, professional development, self determination, communication sciences and disorders, community development, literacy, developmental disabilities, and mental health. Research staffs possess training and expertise in a variety of quantitative and qualitative research methods, including case study, interview, observation, focus group, quasi-experimental design, participatory action research, and survey design. We apply our collective expertise to a broad range of disability topics to inform members of the disability community, policy makers, advocates, other stakeholders, as well as members of the general public. Our research emphasizes sound theory, collaboration with stakeholders, and the applicability of research results.

Despite years of investigation and reporting on the disproportionate representation of culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) students in office discipline referrals and special education, little progress has been made in reducing these disparities. It is recommended that school personnel identify cultural inconsistencies in disciplinary practices, and develop and maintain culturally responsive practices that facilitate improvements in student behavior. The Double-Check framework promotes such practices through self-assessment, and encourages school personnel to recognize their own attitudes and behaviors toward CLD students. Challenge Based Learning is an engaging multidisciplinary approach to teaching and learning that encourages students to leverage the technology they use in their daily lives to solve real-world problems. Challenge Based Learning is collaborative and hands-on, asking students to work with other students, their teachers, and experts in their communities and around the world to develop deeper knowledge of the subjects students are studying, accept and solve challenges, take action, share their experience, and enter into a global discussion about important issues.

Deschler's Center Today, the Center for Research on Learning encompasses six divisions, each with a slightly different research emphasis. We study problems in education and work to place solutions that make a difference into the hands of educators, learners, employers, and policy makers.

"This textbook is the result of over a year of collaboration between several individuals. Garth Holman, the Social Studies department chair and 7th grade world history teacher envisioned this project as a way to engage students through the use of technology and help them see the "big picture" that is often lost, or ignored, in history classes. Beginning in the summer of 2006, Garth began working with a student teacher, Michael Pennington (Currently teaching at Chardon Middle School). Another member of this project was Angie White, an intervention specialist at Beachwood Middle School (now at Hilltop Elementary in Beachwood CIty Schools). Angie provided a strong knowledge of curriculum differentiation and techniques to include students of varying abilities. A project of this nature, allows students to disseminate knowledge in a digital format that is congruent to the world in which they live. Our students are digital natives and this new technological paradigm allows for the democratization of knowledge. Wiki technology and the ability to instantaneously communicate across cultures and physical boundaries means that nothing our students create is isolated. We not only want our students to learn, but understand how the puzzle pieces fit to create the world in which we live."
