Pula: Insuretech Startup Closes $6M Series A Funding to Scale Up Business Across Africa - 1 views

  • Funding Pula: Insuretech Startup Closes $6M Series A Funding to Scale Up Business Across Africa 0 SharesShareTweetSharePin The African Insuretech service provider, Pula, has recently closed a US$6 million Series A funding round led by TLcom Capital and had participation from Women’s World Banking. It specializes in digital as well as agric insurance to derisk smallholder farmers across Africa. This new round of investment to the insuretech startup will be used to scale up operations in the company’s existing 13 markets across Africa. Pula has so far impacted over 4.3 million farmers on the continent and the new funding will help push its expansion into Asia to power resilience and profitability for Asian smallholder farmers. Pula was launched by Rose Goslinga and Thomas Njeru in 2015, to design and deliver innovative agricultural insurance and digital products to help smallholders farmers improve their farming practices, endure climate risks and bolster their incomes. This has become necessary because for smallholder farmers in emerging markets, the traditional method of calculating insurance through farm visits is often expensive, meaning they are often neglected from financial protection against climate risks.

FarmDrive LTD | F6S - 0 views

  • FarmDrive is a tech-driven social enterprise working at the intersection of technology, agriculture and finance. FarmDrive is improving the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in Africa by using new technology and alternative data to increase availability of capital; mitigating both financial and operational risks while creating shared value for other players in the value chain.
    • hibaerrai

FarmDrive gives the opportunity to smallholder farmers to extract loans and have access to different financial services to manage their small businesses.
  • FarmDrive understands smallholder farmers uniquely through dynamic datasets and translates this to financial institutions. More than 50 million smallholder farmers in Africa are struggling to make a living due to lack of capital to improve their farming activities.
  • FarmDrive has developed a platform that gathers data on smallholder farmers both from the ‘ground’ and ‘data from the sky’. FarmDrive uses sophisticated algorithms to turn that data into comprehensive credit profiles of “unbanked and underbanked” smallholders who have little access to credit.

Cryptocurrencies in FinTech - Don't Ignore It | Avatrade NG - 0 views

  • A whole range of companies within the banking and FinTech industries are starting to explore ways through which they can take advantage of the electronic ledger technology that powers cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin and Ethereum. This distributed system stores data chronologically in segments known as “blocks” which allow for the information to be processed and transferred almost instantaneously. Among the benefits of the blockchain technology, that make it so attractive to FinTech companies and other large institutions, is the lowered risk of fraud since the technology is notoriously difficult to hack, its speed and the fact that it eliminates intermediary steps between parties in a transaction.
  •
I think that M-Pesa could implement cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin or Etherum in their service. I think that their customer will quickly shift their usage to cryptocurrencies as they offer higher protection from fraud. It could be life-changing for a mobile payment application like M-Pesa.

US FinTech Will Expand Cryptocurrency Use Case, But Unknowns Remain - 0 views

  • FinTech companies such as PayPal, Visa, Square, Mastercard and others are expanding cryptocurrency (crypto) and blockchain capabilities but several factors could limit widespread acceptance in the near term, says Fitch Ratings. We expect strategic crypto investments to have a limited near-term effect on credit profiles, given modest capital deployed and the long ramp time. However, adding crypto capabilities opens up incremental revenue streams for these companies, even if the return on investment over time and compliance risks are uncertain.
    • nourserghini

Exactly like mobile money started a revolution in the African financial environment since the early 2000s, fintechs have to race for the first place in expanding cryptocurrency and blockchain abilities in the coming years. Especially considering the fact that Africa is already getting more familiar with cryptocurrency services.

FinTech Innovation Map Reveals Emerging Technologies - 0 views

  • Big DataIn addition to traditional financial data collection, new data sources such as mobile banking and the Internet of Things (IoT) provide an additional layer of data gathering. Combined with Artificial Intelligence, Big Data analytics utilize large amounts of old and new data to discover hidden patterns for better risk management and fraud detection. New insights from big data improve the understanding of customer behaviors and help banks to create better and more customized products and services.
    • nourserghini

Big data analytics is another technology that fintechs have to consider in oredr to manage the important number of customers and data they have.
  • AI helps banks to analyze their Big Data to improve existing solutions and make better decisions. A more recent AI trend is to use its cognitive abilities to go through a large amount of unstructured text and data to generate more insights and to learn natural language. A more intelligent AI chatbot or virtual assistant can take over repetitive “low-value” operations, such as performing small amount transactions, explaining financial products and providing basic financial advice to customers.
  •
Artificial Intelligence is a great technology that fintech like M-Pesa has to consider as it could have a big impact on their operations. It could help the company to deal with and analyze big data and generate insights that might have taken months to discover with traditional approaches.

Enriching nutritive value of cassava root by yeast fermentation - 0 views

  • Cassava (Manihot esculenta, Crantz) is extensively cultivated throughout the tropics and subtropics regions due to its ability to grow in diverse soil conditions and minimal management (Wanapat, 2003; Wanapat et al. 2006; Wanapat & Khampa, 2007). The root is composed almost entirely of carbohydrate which can be used as important food source. However, it contains cyanogens (1- 3% CP) depending on cultivars (Stupak et al., 2006) and large amount of cyanogenic glucosides in the cassava flour (Cumbana et al., 2007) which could limit cassava root utilization for consumption and for livestock feeding. The laminarin and lotaustralin cassava's cyanogenic compounds are changed to hydrocyanic acid (HCN) by the action of the laminarase enzyme when roots are crushed or sliced (Wanapat et al., 1999; Cardoso et al., 2005).
