Legal system - South African law - Oxford LibGuides at Oxford University - 0 views

  • South Africa has a mixed legal system. Its doctrines and concepts are influenced both by the civilian tradition (in an uncodified Romano-Dutch form brought by early Dutch settlers) and by the common law tradition (introduced during the British colonial period).  Indigenous people may still choose to be subject to customary law, so long as it does not conflict with the Constitution. Chapter 8 (ss.165-180) of the Constitution, "Courts and Administration of Justice" sets out the structure of South Africa's court system and defines the role of each court. Section 165 says the judicial authority of South Africa is vested in the courts, which are independent and subject only to the Constitution and the law. Section 166 identifies these courts as:

South Africa Overview - 0 views

  • South Africa’s political transition is known as one of the most remarkable political feats of the past century. The ruling African National Congress (ANC) has been driving the policy agenda since 1994. In August 2016 the country held the most competitive local government election since 1994 in which the ANC-lost majority support in four of the metropolitan cities. Political parties negotiated coalition deals that saw the ANC unseated in the cities of Johannesburg, Pretoria and Nelson Mandela Bay. The latest general elections were held in May 2019.

  • In 2014, Standard Bank launched an innovative new app in conjunction with the start-up umbrella company FireID- SnapScan. This app allows its consumers in South Africa to pay for items via their smartphones at retailers who have registered for the app . The idea behind this technology was to increase safety for consumers since this app allows them to leave their bank cards at home. By not having your credit card on you, the creators believe your money is safer.
  • For those of us who are already struggling with limited memory on our smartphones there is some consideration that needs to happen before we can commit to another app. Here are some pros and cons of SnapScan and my final verdict:

Enriching nutritive value of cassava root by yeast fermentation - 0 views

  • Cassava (Manihot esculenta, Crantz) is extensively cultivated throughout the tropics and subtropics regions due to its ability to grow in diverse soil conditions and minimal management (Wanapat, 2003; Wanapat et al. 2006; Wanapat & Khampa, 2007). The root is composed almost entirely of carbohydrate which can be used as important food source. However, it contains cyanogens (1- 3% CP) depending on cultivars (Stupak et al., 2006) and large amount of cyanogenic glucosides in the cassava flour (Cumbana et al., 2007) which could limit cassava root utilization for consumption and for livestock feeding. The laminarin and lotaustralin cassava's cyanogenic compounds are changed to hydrocyanic acid (HCN) by the action of the laminarase enzyme when roots are crushed or sliced (Wanapat et al., 1999; Cardoso et al., 2005).

Eco-innovation and technological cooperation in cassava processing companies: structura... - 0 views

  • The generation of wealth, sustained by productive activities of agro-industries, leads to the production of wastes and uses natural resources, interfering in the environmental pillar of sustainability. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether cassava processing companies generate eco-innovations by means of technological cooperation, and the degree of participation of agents in these interactions. The quantitative method used the structural equation modeling for data analyses. The results indicated a relationship between technological cooperation and the generation of eco-innovation. The model developed showed the significance between variables and exposed the main aspects that generate eco-innovation from technological cooperation. A cooperation process allows a reduction in the burning of fossil fuels, reducing the emission of methane gas, which aggravates the greenhouse effect, also reducing odor, and ultimately, providing financial gains to agribusiness.

Inside SnapScan, SA's app of the year - TechCentral - 2 views

  • SnapScan falls under FireID, the company that now houses six start-up technology businesses, SnapScan being the most recently launched. FireID started life as an information security company specialising in “two-factor authentication” technology for mobile phones. It was funded by billionaire Johann Rupert, through Reinet. Justin Stanford, one of FireID’s co-founders, was instrumental in securing the initial capital injection. However, Stanford was unable to convince Reinet’s investment committee to continue investing and in 2011 it pulled its funding of FireID, forcing the company to lay off its 40 employees.
