He Grew Up on a Farm. Now, He Helps Protect Them. - The New York Times - 0 views

  • If you would have told me 10 years ago that I would be running a company that does agriculture insurance, I would not have believed you. Agriculture has not been an area that people have invested in across Africa. Many of my cousins and childhood friends still work on their farms, but they are reluctant to invest, putting in only what they can afford to lose. The reason they don’t invest is simple. The chance of them losing their money due to the vagaries of the weather is huge. Working in insurance got me to understand about probabilities of loss early on — probabilities that cause our continent to be food insecure.
  • Pula’s mission is to give farmers confidence by providing risk mitigation. Our solutions protect a farmer’s investment by pairing it with insurance. We build business cases to persuade Fortune 500 companies, seed and fertilizer suppliers, lending institutions, and governments in Africa, that embedded insurance will help deliver better results for both businesses and food security.
  •
This article shows how investments in the insurtech industry have grown in Africa over thas past years. It explains the different reasons why people were reluctant to invest in this industry, especially in Africa. The article also explains how the founder of Pula, who was originally a farmer himself, came up with an innovative idea to protect farmers from weather uncertainty.
  •
I like they way Pula stated that its mission is to protect farmers. Pula is playing it smart by talking about customer protection because it makes the customers feel safe.

EasyEquities turns profitable for Purple Group | Company News - 0 views

  • The online equity investment platform has reached a tipping point, with more than 150-thousand active users. Purple Group has reported a strong rise in first-half earnings as its EasyEquities online investment and trading platform reached tipping point. The fintech group owns 70% of EasyEquities and Sanlam Investments holds the remaining 30%.

EasyEquities has been doing very well lately with an increase of active users, profit and platform assets. Even though the COVID crisis will affect them since a lot of people will lose their job, homes etc..many won't be able to invest anymore but still during any crisis there is place for opportunity.
  • The next six months will, no doubt, prove to be unpredictable. In many ways perhaps some of the toughest months experienced in the investment world in decades lie ahead with the world economy in unchartered waters," Purple Group said. "But that suits us just fine. Firm in the knowledge that we simply must, every minute of every day, be there for our partners and clients on their financial journey."
    • aminej

This is the positive mindset that should be kept during crisis. Not only EasyEquities will suffer in this period but many other Fintechs. As we have seen many companies went banckrupt because of the crisis but I really hope EasyEquities will make it because they have been doing great work in Africa and worldwide
  • EasyEquities grew revenue by 140% to R28.6 million in the six months to end-February as the number of funded retail investment accounts more than doubled to 199,491. The platform generated a R76,000 profit for the period from a R12.4 million loss previously. Platform assets quadrupled to R15.8 billion.

The Rise of the Robo-advisor: How Fintech Is Disrupting Retirement - Knowledge@Wharton - 2 views

  • Robos came on the scene about a decade ago, and two early startups were Wealthfront and Betterment. Today, there are dozens of robos in the market, Fisch said. There are pure robo services, as well as those that offer the option of talking to a human advisor, with or without an extra fee. Since they’re automated, robos can more easily avoid conflicts of interest that could beset a human advisor, who might push investments that pay the highest commissions.
    • kenzabenessalah

Having Robo-advisors in EasyEquities would prevent the risk of having conflicts with "human" advisors. Digital assistance is the key.
  • Robo fees can range from zero — if the investor has less than $10,000 to invest — to as high as 0.89% of assets under $1 million in some cases, said Brett Hammond, research leader of Capital Group. But 0.25% to 0.30% of assets is more typical, he added. (The fee is on top of the cost of the investment itself.) As for performance, it’s a mixed bag with some robos doing better than others, Hammond said. The big question is how they will do in the long run, especially during a big market crash, since they don’t have an extended track record yet. “We don’t know in a complete cycle what these [robos] are going to deliver,” he said. “The real issue is, does it improve outcomes?”
    • nouhaila_zaki

This excerpt is important because, on the one hand, it introduces us to the fees that can be charged by Robo-advisors. On the other, performance is hard to measure for robo-advisors since nobody knows how the will behave in the long run and in severe circumstances i.e. a market crash.
  • Artificial intelligence is changing the world of retirement planning. By using improved datasets and algorithms to efficiently deliver solutions tailored to people’s needs, AI can help them save, invest and retire better. One of the hottest trends to emerge in this area in recent years is the use of robo-advisors.
