GUESS is an exploratory data analysis and visualization tool for graphs and networks. The system contains a domain-specific embedded language called Gython (an extension of Python, or more specifically Jython) which supports the operators and syntactic sugar necessary for working on graph structures in an intuitive manner. An interactive interpreter binds the text that you type in the interpreter to the objects being visualized for more useful integration. GUESS also offers a visualization front end that supports the export of static images and dynamic movies.

The Gibeo Network is a new online service built by Gibeo. It's a rapidly growing community, a web annotation service, a open content-enhancing platform, an amazingly simple and useful tool for browsing and sharing the web. The Internet is still a fundamentally changing environment and this is the latest evolution in powerful online services. What is iGlue? The right meaning to the right word. iGlue is an online content management application that reorganizes data fragmented on the net. It arranges pictures, videos, people, notions and geographical locations into a unified and manageable structure. Through this collaboratively edited database iGlue shows the content network of any webpage.

RPI's Tetherless World Constellation will address this emerging area of "Web Science," focusing on the World Wide Web and it's future use. Faculty in the constellation will explore the research and engineering principles that underlie the Web, will enhance the Web's reach beyond the desktop and laptop computer, and will develop new technologies and languages that expand the capabilities of the Web. We will use powerful scientific and mathematical techniques from many disciplines to explore the modeling of the Web from network- and information- centric views. Our goals will include making the next generation web natural to use while being responsive to the growing variety of policy and social needs, whether in the area of privacy, intellectual property, general compliance, or provenance. The Tetherless World Constellation will design new techniques to explore social, scientific, and legal impacts of the evolving technologies deployed on the Web.

OpenSocial's API reference describes a number of classes ('Person', 'Name', 'Email', 'Phone', 'Url', 'Organization', 'Address', 'Message', 'Activity', 'MediaItem', 'Activity', …), each of which has various properties whose values are either strings, references to instances of other classes, or enumerations. I'd like to make them usable beyond the confines of OpenSocial, so I'm making an RDF/OWL version. OpenSocial's schema is an attempt to provide an overarching model for much of present-day mainstream 'social networking' functionality, including dating, jobs etc. Such a broad effort is inevitably somewhat open-ended, and so may benefit from being linked to data from other complementary sources.

Sensemaking systems don't only help people find stuff faster. That's just the information retrieval part. The bigger story is about augmenting and amplifying our abilities to make sense. Sensemaking adds things like skimming, power reading, organizing, spotting patterns, tracing social networks, taking notes, summarizing, drilling for details, and flagging biases. Reading an article is different from reading a book, and that's different from reading from a collection or stream. Radically new forms of human-information interaction are being enabled by these new technologies. Sensemaking systems not only have front ends (visualization), but also back ends (content analytics and reasoning).

Using segments of rich media makes it possible to aggregate context and meaning on these chunks by using a number of different mechanisms. Starting with a granular node -- be it a sound bite, visual clip or written fact -- it is possible to aggregate contextual metadata through a series of steps that emergently progress from: * Starting with thousands of defined Audio Sound Bites & visual clips * Rating sound bites and clustering them with folksonomy tags * Sequencing audio sound bites within playlists * Collaboratively building larger sequences with nested playlists * Independently controlling the video & audio tracks with 2-dimensional nested playlists * Evaluating Multiple Storylines and Hypotheses with a 2-dimensional playlist matrix * Visualizing complex networks by mapping out feedback loop relationships between nodes

In our work the traditional bipartite model of ontologies is extended with the social dimension, leading to a tripartite model of actors, concepts and instances.We demonstrate the application of this representation by showing how community-based semantics emerges from this model through a process of graph transformation. We illustrate ontology emergence by two case studies, an analysis of a large scale folksonomy system and a novel method for the extraction of community-based ontologies from Web pages.

PMOG is an infinite game built on individual network histories, transforming our web surfing into ongoing social play. PMOG fuses an MMO into our WWW. PMOG stands for Passively Multiplayer Online Game. Players play without playing; clicking around the internet turns into experience points and currency. This unconventional massively multiplayer online game merges your web life with an alternate, hidden reality. The mundane takes on a layer of fantastic achievement. Player behavior generates characters and alliances, triggers interactions in the environment, and earns the player points to spend online beefing up their inventory. Suddenly the internet is not a series of untouchable exhibits, but a hackable, rewarding environment.

If companies cannot develop a culture of knowledge sharing and innovation, it's primarily because they are having a hard time measuring the benefits. All metrics of intangibles -and KM in particular- are shaky, and the most promising ones, based on network analysis (VNA) still have a long way to go before they become generally accepted practices. In the meantime, organizing a knowledge market might be the best way to go. Let's imagine what it would look like… First, a separate organization for shared knowledge services would have to be set up, if it doesn't exist already. For lack of a better phrase, let's cal it the corporate university. The problem is that corporate universities, when they exist, are focused on executive programs, which is a very small part of the problem.

Lately I've posted on the need for the enterprise to not use email for everything, and the enabling tools that are more appropriate, especially network centric tools that add the dimension of getting things done via informal circles without relying on just your close colleagues and your hierarchy.

The recent announcement by Microsoft of a bid to acquire Yahoo! in a hostile takeover provides stark evidence of the continuing complexity of the intersection of computing and media businesses battling for dominance in the global market. Just as in the case of Time-Warner and AOL (Klein, 2003), the proposed Microsoft-Yahoo! deal is about convergence. The big difference, however, is the new context of threats and opportunities which have led to Redmond's latest effort to deploy its legendary financial muscle in pursuit of corporate goals of market domination. This difference emerges from changing conditions of networked media-computing which are in part associated with the rise of Web 2.0 and which provide an essential clue to understanding why Web 2.0 occupies such an important position in contemporary thinking about the Internet. As I will explain in this paper, Web 2.0 can itself be understood fully only by locating its emergence and significance within the broad movement of convergence of old and new media forms.
