Create a Color Collage - 0 views

    This activity calls for students to use their imagination when it comes to the different colors. Students are required to know how to classify object according to their color, for example: a blue toy car, a red pony, a green tree. This activity helps younger students work on their sorting skills. In my classroom I would have construction paper divided into four parts. On each part would be a color; Blue, Red Green, and Yellow. I would provide the glue and different colored objects to sort and glue, sequins, stickers, beads, pom-poms, buttons, feathers, macaroni, and foam shapes. Each student will be required to sort and glue objects by color.

    I love the Science Court video series! I saw them once while in an observation and really enjoyed the humor and interactive aspects of each video. This particular video is on living things and could go well in conjunction with a field trip or exploration of the human body. I selected the resource because of my prior knowledge and experience with it, and believe that when used correctly it could be beneficial in introducing broad concepts and getting students engaged and questioning the world around them. I envision this particular resource being used simultaneously with a series of hands on and instructional activities. I think with this sort of video series it can be easy to fall into a sort of pattern where there is little moving around and discussion, but this video series in particular has the potential to be used in much more full and enjoyable ways.

    Videos can be a good tool to use in the classroom. Students just need a break from the teachers' voice and hear things in a new and different way. This is a resource with links to all sorts of free videos for lecture.

    Most of these seem like upper level, maybe even college/adult videos. Be sure to preview before you show any videos in class to avoid surprises!

Magnetic and non-magnetic sorting record charts - 1 views

    This activity will help students identify what is magnetic by testing different objects. Students will work in small groups for this activity, and be provided the necessary materials. They will use magnets to test each item to determine whether or not it is magnetic. Once they have made their decision, they will record it on their worksheet. I selected this resource because it is a great hands-on activity for the students to work together on. The free downloadable printable makes it valuable to me as a teacher because I do not have to take the time to create my own worksheet. I envision this resource being used for a science center. I will provide the objects to the students in a small bucket, and have them use their coloring materials to record their data.

    I like the idea of the blank worksheet, so students could gather up their own collection of items to test, or you could provide some, and then have them select others they would like to try.

Human Body Health & Growth - Science Games & Activities for Kids - 1 views

    This is sort of a short game, but I feel that you could do it as a class or in learning centers after you had taught the lesson. This online game will get students to realize how much food, water, sleep and exercise you need to stay healthy. It also asks question such as "what will happen if he doesn't get enough water". That is probably when I will have the students answer those questions in their notebooks as an assessment of what they had learned from the lesson prior to this activity. I enjoyed playing this game and fighting to keep Ben healthy.

Planetarium Shows | Saint Louis Science Center - 0 views

    This resource includes the information for attending a Planetarium show at the Saint Louis Science Center. This planetarium has a show currently being shown called "The Little Star that Could." The trailer for this video can be found at the site listed. I have attended many educational shows at several different locations, but none seem to ever compare to the ones shown at the Saint Louis Science Center Planetarium. The format of the presentation really resonates with the observers and leaves a lasting impression. I would invite my class to go on a field trip to this planetarium after a lesson on the solar system.

    The Live Sky Tonight show at the Saint Louis Science Center could be an incredibly fun experience for students who are studying the night sky at home! In cooperation with creating some sort of sky map at home or at school using the internet as well as visual observations, both or either, the students could compare their own work with that displayed at the planetarium! This resource would serve as particularly helpful for visual learners who may benefit from this immersive model, and it might also encourage those who had not been as engaged in star mapping before to become more involved after the experience!

    This is a very interactive smartboard activity that goes through different characteristics of living things (i.e. crocodiles have scales, etc), and also requires the students to sort the different living things. They have categories such as animals with fur, animals that swim, etc. This aligns very nicely with the standard 12.A.1b- Categorize living things using a variety of observable features.

    Skeletons are the structures that hold our bodies together and are very important to keeping us healthy. Students can play do an online interactive activity while learning about moving and growing by sorting and labeling the bones of a human skeleton. For added difficulty, or to use this link associated with a different unit, students are also able to label the skeletons of other animals such as an insect, fish or horse. I would use this website in a lower elementary classroom for a quick, fun assessment on the bones.

    To show students that many kinds of organisms can be sorted into groups in many ways using various features to decide which organisms belong to which group. Classification systems are not part of nature. Instead, they are frameworks created by biologists to help them understand and describe the vast diversity of organisms and suggest relationships among living things. I would need adapt this lesson to meet a standard, but I would try to make the connection that plants and animals have similar internal and external structures to survive.

    This webpage has a lot of information on the macromolecules in which students can choose to hear it, read it, or go through more visual animated slides. I would use this in conjunction with a fill in the blank worksheet of some sort to use as a scavenger hunt. It would be a good introduction or review depending on the background knowledge of the class.

    What I love about this science activity is that students are able to make their own bio domes from household items. By using, 3 two- liter soda bottles, a soda cap, soil, and something to plant, students will be able to grow their own plant. Along the way they will learn about the water cycle and how this infrastructure helps promote the grow of an organism. For an activity I would sort students into groups of three. Each group will bring their own supplies. In class they will construct their bio domes and plant a specimen that I will provide them. Once the construction aspect is completed we will set each labeled bio dome aside. Throughout the weeks to come each group, ever student, will keep record of how much their plant is growing. In their records they will summarize what they observe and what they think is going to happen.
