The most distant known galaxy to host a supermassive black hole has been discovered in a galaxy that formed in the early history of the universe. The galaxy, as large as the Milky Way, is about 12.8 billion light-years away and harbors a supermassive black hole that contains at least a billion times as much matter as our sun.

Looking almost 11 billion years into the past, astronomers have measured the motions of stars for the first time in a very distant galaxy and clocked speeds upwards of one million miles per hour, about twice the speed of our Sun through the Milky Way. The fast-moving stars shed new light on how these distant galaxies, which are a fraction the size of our Milky Way, may have evolved into the full-grown galaxies seen around us today. The results will be published in the August 6, 2009 issue of the journal Nature, with a companion paper in the Astrophysical Journal.

Astronomers' new observations have spotted the most distant galaxy ever seen. The galaxy's light comes from about 13.1 billion light-years away, making it one of the first galaxies to form after the Big Bang.

The paper, Gentile et al, Nature, 461, 627, 2009, discusses the apparent constant surface mass density of disk galaxies in the centers, over several orders of magnitude in mass and luminosity of galaxies, and that the density, when fit with a cold dark matter inspired density profile for the galaxy halos, leads one to conclude the break radius is such that the inferred cold dark matter density decreases at a radius corresponding to an apparently near constant acceleration.

New results from digital sky surveys highlight more inconsistencies in our understanding of early galaxies, which, in contrast to today's galaxies, were compact and rapidly moving.

Using entire galaxies as lenses to look at other galaxies, researchers have a newly precise way to measure the size and age of the universe and how rapidly it is expanding, on a par with other techniques. The measurement determines a value for the Hubble constant, which indicates the size of the universe, and confirms the age of the universe as 13.75 billion years old, within 170 million years. The results also confirm the strength of dark energy, responsible for accelerating the expansion of the universe.

Captured by NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and combined with data from infrared and optical telescopes, this image shows the farthest galaxy cluster ever detected. Designated JKCS041, the cluster is located 10.2 billion light-years from Earth, beating the previous distance record by a billion light-years. Astronomers think JKCS041 formed just about as early as was feasible.

ScienceDaily (July 27, 2011) - Using a measurement of the clustering of the galaxies surveyed, plus other information derived from observations of the early universe, researchers have measured the Hubble constant with an uncertainly of less than 5 percent. The new work draws on data from a survey of more than 125,000 galaxies.

A new project to create a 3D map of space so large that scientists can find a 500 million-light-year-size remnant from the early universe inside it began operation last month. The Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey opened its eyes to the universe, taking in data from hundreds of galaxies and quasars in the constellation Aquarius, from its perch on the Apache Point Observatory in New Mexico. Eventually, it will image two million galaxies and quasars.

The most distant known galaxy cluster has been discovered with NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory. The cluster, known as JKCS041, is located about 10.2 billion light-years away and is observed as it was when the universe was only about a quarter of its present age. It beats the previous record holder, XMMXCS J2215.9-1738, by about a billion light-years.

And it will search for strangelets, a theoretical form of matter that's ultra-massive because it contains so-called strange quarks

Together with ever-improving observations of the early universe, grand simulations are beginning to paint a single, unifying picture of why the universe looks as it does. At its heart is an almost invisible scaffold of dark matter and cold gas on which the visible constituents of the universe hang - a structure known as the cosmic web.
