Telomeres, the repetitive sequences of DNA at the ends of linear chromosomes, have an important function: They protect vulnerable chromosome ends from molecular attack. Researchers at Rockefeller University now show that telomeres have their own weakness. They resemble unstable parts of the genome called fragile sites where DNA replication can stall and go awry. But what keeps our fragile telomeres from falling apart is a protein that ensures the smooth progression of DNA replication to the end of a chromosome.

Drury, a geneticist, is a pioneer in new research exploring the biological impacts of early adversity on children. She is the first scientist to show that extreme stress in infancy can biologically age a child by shortening the tips of chromosomes, known as telomeres. These caps keep chromosomes from shrinking when cells replicate. Shorter telomeres are linked to higher risks for heart disease, cognitive decline, diabetes and mental illness in adults.

Die Auswertungen zeigten: Männer, die mindestens zwei Jahre lang arbeitslos gewesen waren, hatten doppelt so häufig signifikant verkürzte Teleomere als Männer, die durchwegs in Beschäftigung gewesen waren. Die Ergebnisse hielten auch statistischen Verfahren stand, die systematisch andere Faktoren ausschließen, die zu dem Ergebnis geführt haben könnten - beispielsweise der Gesundheitszustand, oder sozioökonomische Faktoren. Die Forscher fanden den Zusammenhang zwischen verkürzten Telomeren und Arbeitslosigkeit allerdings nicht bei den Frauen. Warum das so ist, bleibt unklar"
