Ellouise Leadbeater: Entomology: It's gotta bee me | The Economist - 0 views

"SOCIAL insects are often dismissed as slaves to the collective mind of the hive. But individual members of colonies do have brains and are technically capable of making their own decisions. Indeed, several studies have shown that insects such as ants and bees sometimes ignore shared information in favour of what they individually know. What drives them to act independently has been something of a mystery. New research shows that when a tasty source of food is available the hive mentality is blatantly ignored"

Why animals don't have infrared vision: Source of the visual system's 'false alarms' di... - 2 views

  •
ScienceDaily (June 9, 2011) - On rare occasion, the light-sensing photoreceptor cells in the eye misfire and signal to the brain as if they have captured photons, when in reality they haven't. For years this phenomenon remained a mystery. Reporting in the June 10 issue of Science, neuroscientists at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine have discovered that a light-capturing pigment molecule in photoreceptors can be triggered by heat, as well, giving rise to these false alarms.

Ten things we don't understand about humans - New Scientist - 0 views

  •
We belong to a remarkably quirky species. Despite our best efforts, some of our strangest foibles still defy explanation. But as science probes deeper into these eccentricities, it is becoming clear that behaviours and attributes that seem frivolous at first glance often go to the heart of what it means to be human.

Why sleep? Scientist delves into one of science's great mysteries - 1 views

  •
Bats, birds, box turtles, humans and many other animals share at least one thing in common: They sleep. Humans, in fact, spend roughly one-third of their lives asleep, but sleep researchers still don't know why.

Mystery of Bird Maleness Partly Solved - 0 views

  •
In a recent study, researchers show that a gene called DMRT1 found only on the Z chromosome partly explains bird "maleness". When a ZZ embryo gets less DMRT1, the embryos start to take on some female traits. These studies show us that bird gender can be partly explained by genetics. Not having enough of a single gene can keep a bird from becoming a bona fide male bird. But this doesn't rule out the possibility of a female gene being on the W chromosome. Scientists just haven't yet found one.
