ScienceDaily (May 4, 2011) - A much reduced covering of snow, shorter winter season and thawing tundra: The effects of climate change in the Arctic are already here. And the changes are taking place significantly faster than previously thought. This is what emerges from a new research report on the Arctic, presented in Copenhagen this week. Margareta Johansson, from Lund University, is one of the researchers behind the report.

'It is now virtually certain a child born in 1979 will not reach 50 years of age before the Arctic is ice-free in the summer. That is a rapid change on a planetary scale, with far-reaching consequences that scientists are just beginning to understand.' Stephen Leahy, Inter Press Service

"WWF supports research on wildlife populations throughout the Arctic and around the world. Using radio devices, which transmit location data by satellite, researchers can follow individual animals to learn more about their habitats, behaviour and migration patterns. The researchers share this data with WWF regularly, so check back often to see where the animals are going!"
