YouTube - The Evolution of Remix Culture - 0 views

Remix Culture: Part 1 of 3. At about 8 minutes this is a great intro to remix culture.  What is remix culture?  From my point of view, it is the recontextualization of information which results in increased meaning.  By drawing upon part of our shared cultural heritage (a song or video) and mashing it up with either another part of our shared culture or content created by yourself (or friends),  people are now able to leverage both content areas to make ultra rich content. Kind of like when you watch "The Wizard of Oz" and listen to "Dark Side of the Moon"

Some Ideas for Motivating Students - 0 views

  • they do not understand what to do or why they should do it. Teachers should spend more time explaining why we teach what we do, and why the topic or approach or activity is important and

Students need to have a purpose/reason- jumping through hoops does not motivate many students.
  • Everyone likes the feeling of accomplishment and recognition; rewards for good work produce those good feelings.

I have found that in many cases it is the praise or acknowledgement of good behavior or good work- the reward is physical evidence of that- the kids do not care about the value of the reward. In fact often the crummier the reward the more they enjoy it.
  • If you can make something fun, exciting, happy, loving, or perhaps even a bit frightening, students will learn more readily and the learning will last much longer

This makes me think of some of the field work our students have experienced- makes learning more relevant.

  • Attending to need satisfaction is a primary method of keeping students interested and happy.

Yes, if the student does not have needs met and feel they are safe/secure then learning does not happen.

Homework and Practice | Researched-Based Strategies | Focus on Effectiveness - 5 views

  • Understand the four types of homework. Know when and why to have students practice: Memorization of basic rules, algorithms, or laws so the skill becomes rote. Increase in skill speed, used for improving students' abilities to apply these skills in more complex problem solving. Deepening understanding of a concept—providing students time to read further, elaborating on a new idea and expanding their understanding. Preparation for the following day's learning, such as an advance organizer or cue to increase readiness for new information.
  • Practice means students are engaged in applying new learning, often repeatedly

This strikes me as super relevant to planning.

This sounds a lot like sped steps of skill acquisition: introduce the skill/concept, practice till mastery (usually 90%) then after mastered, practice for fluency, which is when skills can be timed.

Differentiated Instruction with UDL | National Center on Accessible Instructional Mater... - 3 views

  • The instructional concepts should be broad-based, not focused on minute details or unlimited facts. Teachers must focus on the concepts, principles and skills that students should learn. The content of instruction should address the same concepts with all students, but the degree of complexity should be adjusted to suit diverse learners.
    • Siri Anderson

I often find that teachers struggle to identify different concent for learners because they are overly focused on the facts of the assessment rather than the concepts in the standard. If we can always articulate to learners what they are going to learn in broad terms we may be better able to see that the concept can be covered at varying levels of complexity. I found with middle school students the easiest content differentiation was providing different reading materials to different students about the same theme.
  • Differentiated instruction is a process to teaching and learning for students of differing abilities in the same class.

Remix Culture: Addendum  Remix Culture at it's finest and funniest.  These people have taken cspan coverage and newscasters, auto-tuned their voices, added a backing beat and created an amazing song.  This is not the funniest but it is the most pc of their videos.  I don't think any of their videos would be offensive to most adults.  "Turtles," is probably my fav.

Easy Addition - An AskERIC Lesson Plan - 0 views

  • THE ANSWER!!! TIP: If the above example had a list of sums that ended with a 20 *(rather than 19), the list can be added just as the original problem was added so that the student won't have to carry here either. See the sample below. EXAMPLE: 5830 2967 836 + 38567 -------- 30000 15000 3000 180 Here the 80 + 20 = 100. Using 20 the old method of adding, the ------- '1' would have to be carried... 40000 here we just add from left to 8000 right again to get rid of that 100 problem... 100 ------- 48200 THE ANSWER!!! TYING IT TOGETHER: Do math problems and test the kids for speed and accuracy. I usually do a pretest without telling the kids why...having them time the test. I keep this and give it again a couple/three weeks later once they

No classrooms and lots of technology: a Danish school's approach - The Globe and Mail - 1 views

  • “We try to put the single child in the centre and challenge every child,” he says. “We let each child work in the learning style that is preferable for them.”
  • Cellphones are permitted and the youngest students are each given a laptop or tablet. Older students are free to come and go from school as they please, as long as they stay in touch with teachers by smartphone
  • all about equipping students with 21st century skills, such as synthesizing large amounts of information accessible online and working on problems with groups. “Our philosophy is that we have to give students academic skills, but just as important are social and personal skills.”

What Is a "Professional Learning Community"? // Richard DuFour - 0 views

  • This simple shift—from a focus on teaching to a focus on learning—has profound implications for schools.

  • When a school begins to function as a professional learning community, however, teachers become aware of the incongruity between their commitment to ensure learning for all students and their lack of a coordinated strategy to respond when some students do not learn

When the grant was being written John was one of the people we contacted. Although we can not pay him to take part in our activities (because he works for a governmental agency) he would still like to participate with our group. I talked to him this past Tuesday and I believe he will be attending our next steering committee meeting.
