HowStuffWorks "10 Differences Between Macs and PCs" - 1 views

  •
An article the few PC users left in the program! Actually, as a long-time mac enthusiast, I found this article interesting because the reasons I like a Mac, are the same reasons everyone else does too, but it pointed out some interesting ProPC features that I never would have thought about.

Dark Social: We Have the Whole History of the Web Wrong - Alexis C. Madrigal - The Atla... - 0 views

  •
In light of our discussion this week on the social web, this article challenges the dominant history of the internet suggesting that the true social web started in the 1990s with link sharing. Today, the vast trove of social traffic is essentially invisible to most analytic programs. The author calls it the "DARK SOCIAL."

Radical experiments in fiction -- on Twitter - 0 views

  •
Definitely an interesting new way of using Twitter: to storytell. "The first Twitter Fiction Festival, a five-day event starting November 28 that will showcase "creative experiments in storytelling from authors around the world." Twitter to announce the authors on November 19.

We can hear you having sex - 1 views

It always amazes me how people are finding new ways to communicate with out another. Changing the name of your wi-fi network to passive-agressively tell off your neighbour - hilarious. Just shows how much communication takes place on a virtual platform.

The News App That's Going To Drive The Media Insane - 1 views

Reinventing the news story into aggregated briefs, fixing "what older media organizations had demonstrated they couldn't, and effectively doing it all on the backs of existing media properties." Reading news as units of information.

What is StumbleUpon? | StumbleUpon.com - 0 views

  •
One of my favourite websites for everything that has to do with advertising, photography, and video...Stumble helps you easily discover new and interesting stuff on the Web. Tell them what you like, and they'll introduce you to amazing web pages, videos, photos and more that you wouldn't have found on your own.

Why Marketers Should Be Targeting Social Moms On Twitter And Facebook [INFOGRAPHIC] - A... - 0 views

  •
Interesting how this demographic is increasing its presence on social networks. Something to keep in mind for future digital marketing strategies. "Moms social network a lot. How much? Eight out of ten (80 percent) use social media regularly, with 90 percent of those having visited Facebook in the past 30 days, and just over one-third (37 percent) hanging out on Twitter over that same period."

Mobile Email Newsletters (Jakob Nielsen's Alertbox) - 0 views

  •
This in an interesting study about newsletters and usability issues on a mobile platform, that came to me via some of my Linkedin contacts. I have been responsible for the office newsletter in several workplaces and making the newsletter accessible via mobile phones is definitely something to think about especially as more companies are providing smartphones for employees.

Catfish - A Documentary - 0 views

  •
A very interesting movie that deals with anonymity on the internet. 2 filmakers look at a friendship formed online between an artist and a small-town family. I really liked the documentary!
  •
The filmmakers of this documentary have come under a lot of fire as to whether or not the film was staged. After reflecting it does seem coincidental that so much of this key points of the storyline are caught on tape. However, staged or not it really makes you question who you might be talking to on the internet.

Wireless market 'functioning well' in Canada: researcher - The Globe and Mail - 0 views

  •
A light read, but a really great insight into wireless networks in Canada. Funny how the market is "functioning well," yet there are still so many accessibility issues related to internet access which need to be adressed, especially with regards to rural communities. The issue of access was touched on in Dijk's readings.

On Obama's Reddit Appearance - 0 views

We were discussing Obama's Reddit appearance in class last week and I brough up this article. It discusses how reddit is a "terrible platform for extracting information from a politician." Here is a link to the AMA too: http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/z1c9z/i_am_barack_obama_president_of_the_united_states/

10 back-to-school mobile apps for university students - Canada - CBC News - 0 views

  •
As a group, we have been discussing ways to stay organized and on top of our workload for this program and seeing as the vast majority of us have smartphones some of the apps suggested here might be able to help! The suggestions come from app developers who are students themselves, including Brennan McEachran, who is a fourth-year commerce student at Ryerson.

The Magic of Emoji - 0 views

  •
Emojis represent a move to standardize emoticons. I'd like to emphasize the "emotion" part of the portmanteau. Emotions are devastatingly difficult things to transmit electronically. But try we shall! Emotions are information- and context-rich. We want people to know how we feel because that piece of information provides a lot in any communication context. How often do you use emoticons or emojis? Why do we try to avoid using emoticons and emojis in formal/professional communication? Why is it inappropriate to display emotions in a professional setting?

Myspace Unveils Video Preview of Dramatic Redesign | News & Opinion | PCMag.com - 0 views

  •
I mentioned Myspace a lot in the discussion for next week. Here is an example of a social media that essentially died but is trying to come back. Aggressively. The interface seems to highly draw upon Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest... Will the redesign work? Do we want a Twitter-Facebook hybrid? Or do users like having them separate? What will the new Myspace mean for communicators who use social media?

Twitter's most active country is China (where it is blocked) - 0 views

  •
It's not much of a surprise when China tops a "world's most" list since it does, after all, have the biggest population. It is, however, intriguing that a new study discovered that China is the most active country for Twitter, as the service is blocked there. I find this interesting because they have Sina Weibo, the Chinese equivalent of Twitter (which I use to follow Asian public figures), and yet they choose to go the extra length to use a platform that is blocked in their country. It's surprising that (according to the article) China and India have more Twitter users than the US.

Can a wireless 'code of conduct' cure CRTC's poor record on competition? - 1 views

This is an interesting article about wireless regulation (or the lack of regulation) in Canada. I thought this was especially interesting considering we were just talking about the mobile revolution and the effect it has on work.
