Sensory Activities for Elderly Men: Men's Sheds and Meaningful Movement - 1 views

  •
This blog posting is not from an OT-specific source, but rather is a posting from a movement/dance coach who offers a unique perspective on the specific sensory needs of aging men. Reading this posting reminded of something my dad has always said about the importance of men having a space where they can work and be "themselves." Whether or not you agree with that sentiment, I think that it is important to remember that men/women/people all have different needs and oftentimes it takes different approaches to meet those needs.

Arthritis gadgets - 0 views

Here's a site that identifies 10 wonderful arthritis gadgets. I think we've seen most of them in lab. It would be nice to have a list like this that we could give to our clients.

The Boy With a Thorn in His Joints - 0 views

  •
This is a newspaper article about a little boy diagnosed with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (J.I.A.) and his mother's search for a cure. The mother thinks there is a connection between leaky gut syndrome and the JIA. It is a very interesting read, especially reading about his symptoms prior to diagnosis. (spoiler alert -- it has a good ending).

This is a heartbreaking disease. Children should be able to frolic in the fields, not have to deal with such a thing as this. :(

Median Nerve Gliding - 0 views

  •
This is a very good video demonstrating median nerve gliding. I found this very interesting because I have been told I have problems with my nerves in the same area. I am starting to wonder if this is something I may benefit from.

Very helpful video! I am gonna try it. I have alot of neck pain anyway, and I think this may help me? If not, maybe I will at least get a good stretch out of it. :)

Ergonomics - 0 views

Sometimes we are thinking consistently about the patient and not so much about the therapist, the body mechanics used, and the ergonomics to help prevent major problems later on!

OTR Spotlight: Michael Graham - 0 views

  •
This isn't a long article but I thought it ties into our evidence based papers that we have done for school. This guy thinks in the future that Occupational Therapists AND Occupational Therapy Assistants will have to use evidence-based research to justify interventions. (In other words, it's not stopping once we graduate)! "Michael Graham expects the next five years to bring an even greater focus on evidence-based care. The 14-year OTR believes there will be greater expectations for occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants more quickly implement evidence-based approaches into their practice."

Meet the woman who has 'awesome sex life' with her '2-foot-8-inch' hubby - 2 views

  •
Ok, I admit when I watch this special guy on the stress video Teri posted I couldn't help but think about his life and how things clicked for him? I looked a few more of his vidoes and found he was married and is a very sexual little person. So, I wanted to share what I found. :)

New Bionics Let Us Run, Climb and Dance | Hugh Herr | TED Talks - 0 views

The world of prosthesis is constantly growing in technology and this video shows just how far technology has come. The bionics are controlled by neural commands rather than nerve impulses, which allows for a more accurate ambulation. In this video Hugh Herr describes how the bionics are made and what the measuring process is for the patient. I think this will help reinforce what we learned this past Friday about amputated limbs. Also, there is a lot of information as to whom these bionics would be good for and how one may get one.

PAMs - 0 views

  •
I really liked this article because it goes into detail about several different PAMs. But it also goes on to explain in more detail how it should be used as a preparatory activity, and also has different principles to follow when administering or when giving certain tasks to others. I think this is definitely a very good article to have access to that talks about all aspects of using PAMs in therapy.
