I really just skimmed through this since, like medical coding, reading policies is not something that I want to do. Regardless, there are some interesteing things I saw in this policy and may be a good go-to document.

Fall Prevention- Hidden Hazzards in the Home - Interim HealthCare - 6 views

  •
this is a neat interactive tool that you can use with senior (or any age) clients to help educate them about what safety hazards to watch out for and avoid in their home. It is a fun, visual way to show and tell the client about what to look for in the different rooms (living room, kitchen, bathroom and bedroom) in order to reduce the risk of falling. Something different besides a checklist.

America is rapidly aging in a country built for the young - 4 views

  •
Although we seldom think about them this way, most American communities as they exist today were built for the spry and mobile. We've constructed millions of multi-story, single-family homes where the master bedroom is on the second floor, where the lawn outside requires weekly upkeep, where the mailbox is a stroll away.
  •
I found this really interesting as we're discussing ageing in place and accessibility in housing. One wonders how society as a whole will handle this issue as a huge demographic ages.

This article details the most common type of nerve compression syndromes of the hand. It describes the anatomy, site of compression, symptoms, and treatment for each one. I think it is very useful information for our upcoming exam.

An interview with Eleanor Smith of Concrete Change - 0 views

  •
I found this really great website that described what visitability is, who it is for, and some statistics that show how badly homes need to meet the visitability requirement. The page I specifically bookmarked is what really stood out to me, it is an interview with Eleanor Smith, the Founder of "Concrete Change" and the U.S. visitability movement. Please take time to read her story of growing up with a disability and how difficult it was for her when her friends and families houses were not accessible to her, and what she decided to do about it.

Visitability | basic access to homes - 1 views

This is a simple little reminder of what visitability is and how it makes a home a welcome spot for people with kids to the elderly. I thought is was short and simple, and that made me want to post it.
  •
My friend that has ALS comes over to visit quite often. We do not have a zero entry. What we do have is a portable ramp that she uses to get in the one small step at the back of the house. I wonder why the term visitability only includes a zero entry and wouldn't consider the use of a portable ramp? Something to think about...

The article also gives information on interventions if driving is no longer possible. There is a hyperlink in this article that takes you to the AOTA's driver safety webpage. From there you can search for a driving specialist and access safety guidelines.

10 Fun Ways To Reduce Your Cortisol Levels - 3 views

  •
These 10 fun ways to reduce cortisol levels are achievable by most anyone. Lissa has even created and provided a free self healing kit if any of these activities, particularly if you find it hard to sit still and be quiet, are difficult. I like the fact that each activity is very accessible and for the most part cost free. For example, laughter, try to win a stare down and not laugh. Or...listen to someone else laugh, that will get you every time... And it's FREE!!! This lady also provides some pretty cool TED talks, adding science to the topic.

Aging in Place - 1 views

  •
This webpage offers information as to the benefits of aging in place. I didn't realize how cost effective it is to age in place rather than going to an assisted living or nursing home. Not only the accessibility of the home but also the technology that would need to be learned for the homeowner to receive the care and emergency help when needed.

The impact of Occupational Therapy on pediatric patients undergoing a stem cell transplant - 0 views

  •
This article from AOTA really hit home with me. My mom had a stem cell transplant in November of 2012, and it saved her life. Your immune system is severely compromised during a stem cell transplant, and because of that she had limited access to people, and places outside the hospital. My mom is an adult, and she had a hard time with the limited social interaction, so I can only imagine how hard it is for a child to go through a stem cell transplant and be able to play with their peers at school or at a playground. I know a lot of us will not deal with cases as severe as a stem cell transplant, but it is still encouraging to know that occupational therapy can help. The therapist in the article worked with the kids to make sure they did not develop muscle weakness, or lose ROM while they were in the hospital. This article really made me appreciate the holistic care that OT provides, regardless of your age.
