This is a very interesting read, discusses new tool that is more accurate for doctors to help diagnosis forms of dementia. It goes into more depth on the two most common types. :)

It used to be that Alzheimer's could only be determined for certain by autopsy. I believe that's changed now, with scanning techniques and biomarker testing. Tests like the one in your article give me a lot of hope that within the next generation, we'll be able not only to better treat dementias, but maybe even prevent them.

Okay, I know this isn't related to this semester, but it was so interesting and so intense I thought I'd post it here anyway. It's about what they discovered in Robin Williams' autopsy, which is a type of dementia that I had not heard of but we all should be aware of.

This blog posting talks about the importance of pacing your interactions with those who have dementia. Not all people suffering from dementia will have the same level of cognizance but it is important for us as future OT practitioners to understand that no matter their level of function, clients should always be spoken to as if they are able to respond. The focus in most healthcare settings is to be as efficient with your time as possible, so striking a balance between efficiency and giving your client adequate time to communicate their needs is one of the demands of our client-centered form of care.

My friends mother has been diagnosed with FTD at the age of 58. I found this article while helping her research what she could expect. Thought it would be very beneficial to her as the caregiver and also us as students to have a better understanding of the different types of dementia.

I know we are past aging in place by a little bit, but I came across this again and wanted to share! A really interesting outlook on aging in place in a mock village for dementia patients. The patients live on site in their own apartments which they are aided in managing independently. The town has everything from grocery stores to movie theaters. Nursing staff dress in plain clothes to give the environment a "real-life" feel and encourage patients to operate on their own schedule. This is currently in the Netherlands, but how cool would it be to have OT's work in something like this!

As the population ages many of use will have to face sexuality issues with our own parents. Two extremes are represented here, one home where the man was forced to move after found having sex with another resident and one where sexual relationships are considered natural.

Yet another benefit of taking fish oil. It tends to help with RA and has added health benefits from way back in the olden days. Even at my age I am taking my fish oil daily! Last semester we learned it helped ward off effects of dementia also.

In the war against aging, Alzheimer's disease is one of our biggest foes. But while we seem to be losing the battle, we may finally have found some chinks in its armor. The most common form of dementia already affects an estimated 5.2 million Americans and 45 million others worldwide, and these numbers are projected to triple by the year 2050 as the baby boomer generation reaches retirement.

Even though Alzheimer's disease fell into our psycho-social class, it still is a huge component of the ageing process for many people, and a condition that we will most likely be dealing with.

A Taiwanese designer named Sha Yao began her project in creating tableware for Alzheimer's patients due to her grandmothers deteriorating condition. She based her designs and color usage due to a study finding that the use of bright colors increased the amount of food and liquid consumed by patients. Every piece of the tableware is designed with dementia patients in mind. Some of the adaptive silverware and plates with lips should look familiar from our pediatrics class!
