TED talk on Targeted Muscle Reinnervation - 3 views

  •
Awesome TEDtalk by Todd Kuiken about Targeted Muscle Reinnervation (the future of UE prothesis). This is a much watch video about the future of UE prosthesis. Targeted Muscle Reinnervation is an intuitive way to use hand and elbow prothesis with your thoughts. This is a better way to control your arm and grasp patterns. And hopefully in the future this technology will allow its users to 'feel' sensations in their prosthetic hand. Amanda, the patient talks about how the most important thing to her in working with children was the ability to clap again. Great video! Very informative.

How cool are these bean bags?? They would be great to use in a classroom during story time, or at home while the child is watching a movie. The bean bags look very comfortable, and they provide the deep pressure children with ASD and SPD crave.

Helping Young Burn Victims Go Back to School - 1 views

  •
There are quite a few programs designed to help children return to school after a burn injury, but it sounds like this was the first.
  •
Interesting article, Lorie. I taught at a high school several years ago that had a pretty strict "no hats worn in the building" policy. There was one kid that I kept seeing that had a toboggan. Turns out he had had severe head burns, and the school permitted him to wear it. Good for them.

The quick shoe tie. - 0 views

I'm not sure what population would benefit most from this, maybe children with fine motor problems? It is a faster way to tie your shoes, with less steps.

I've heard a lot about the OT tool box, but this mom has made her own tool kit with over 50 items. They are all meant for children, but some can be used for adults. Bonus, a lot of this stuff can be made at home or bought for cheap at Walmart.

How schools ruined recess - and four things needed to fix it - 1 views

  •
"What if we took a totally different approach to recess instead? A therapeutic approach that values the needs of the whole child and views recess as a form of prevention instead of simply time to get "energy out." What if we let children fully move their bodies during recess time, let them get dirty, and even test out new theories?"

Understanding the Occupational Therapy Needs of Adults with Sensory Processing Disorder - 0 views

  •
We've learned a lot about the importance for children with sensory processing disorders to receive OT in our pediatrics class this semester, but often when those disorders go untreated they persist into adulthood. This webpage discusses the ties that SPD in adults have to higher likelihood of anxiety and depression and overall poorer quality of life. The page discusses the importance of OT intervention in desensitization training, education, and reduction of any negative coping strategies developed by those adults. Very interesting read.

The Boy With a Thorn in His Joints - 0 views

  •
This is a newspaper article about a little boy diagnosed with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (J.I.A.) and his mother's search for a cure. The mother thinks there is a connection between leaky gut syndrome and the JIA. It is a very interesting read, especially reading about his symptoms prior to diagnosis. (spoiler alert -- it has a good ending).

This is a heartbreaking disease. Children should be able to frolic in the fields, not have to deal with such a thing as this. :(
