It goes on to explain how to develop a community based fall prevention program and the necessary components such as education, exercise, medication management, home assessment and home safety. Great resource with a lot of information about fall prevention.

I like this poster on how to prevent falls with the elderly. I feel like this would be great for not only the patient but family to understand ways to prevent falls.

this is a neat interactive tool that you can use with senior (or any age) clients to help educate them about what safety hazards to watch out for and avoid in their home. It is a fun, visual way to show and tell the client about what to look for in the different rooms (living room, kitchen, bathroom and bedroom) in order to reduce the risk of falling. Something different besides a checklist.

This video provides great information about falling. Also, ways in which we can modify the home in order to prevent falling. It provides info on age ranges in which falling increases and signs of fear of falling.

Coinciding with tomorrow's lesson on aging adults and fall prevention, there's a "National Fall Prevention Day" set to take place September 22. The article contains some stats regarding injuries and death related to falls.

This is a link to an awesome website for The Fontana Center.  The Fontana Center is a center for work rehabilitation.  It is owned and run by an OTR and also hires COTAs, massage therapy, and fitness experts.  This place is very holistic.  It offers seminars and workshops on ergonomics and preventing work place injury.  It also prescreens employees for companies to make sure their candidate can handle the physical aspects of the job that they are applying for…this saves the company lots of money in the long run.  The facility offers functional capacity evaluations and work hardening programs.  It also has fitness classes including water aerobics/therapy, yoga, and even classes for seniors.  This is great for fall prevention! I love this place…I wonder how many places like this exist in the US?

I actually taught this program under a PT when I worked at Greenfield Senior Living. It focuses on strengthening, balance, and walking which decreases chance of falling with the aging adults. Studies have shown that falls are reduced by 35% by using this program.

This CDC site lists several exercise programs that are geared toward older adults and fall prevention. Click on one of the links and you will get an overview of the study that the exercise program was used in and all the ones I have looked at so far have downloads in pdf form of exercises.

This semester we had a discussion about older adults and how to help them prevent fells as they age in place. This website gives a detailed list and tips you want to remember to help an older adult prevent falls so that they may age in place safely.

"A previous fall is one of the strongest risk factors for falling again..." Very beneficial read pertaining to what we have covered over the semester!

This page from the AOTA website contains links to various topics associated with the aging adult. These are tip sheets that explain different conditions and how OT can help. These include aging in place, living with Alzheimer's, fall prevention, hip replacement, home modification, low vision, driving and stroke. In addition to the tip sheets, there are links to videos for aging in place, home modification and precautions the elderly can take to prevent falls in the home. This is a great place to look to obtain a lot of good information on a variety of problems the elderly can face and how occupational therapy can help this population.
