Build Vocabulary Cards with Google Presentation10:32 AM Susan Oxnevad 1 comment There is a wealth of research to suggest that vocabulary knowledge is the single best predictor of student academic achievement across all curriculum areas. Experts agree that vocabulary development is an attainable goal. If given the opportunity to receive effective vocabulary instruction, most students can acquire vocabulary at rates that will improve their comprehension and also their chances for success in school. Technology is an effective and engaging tool that can be used to improe vocabulary acquisition for all learners and engage them in the learning process. Google Presentation offers some features that make it an attractive tool for a lesson in which students work collaboratively to construct knowledge about vocabulary by creating vocabulary cards.

CivilWar@Smithsonian Collections - 0 views

he Smithsonian Institution houses an extraordinary array of Civil War artifacts in nearly a dozen of its museums and archives. They range in interest from personal effects-Abraham Lincoln's black beaver top hat-to examples of uniforms and weapons, some of which were manufactured in the tens of thousands. Many artifacts, like a sheet of ninety-six Confederate postage stamps accessioned in 1886, were gifts to the Smithsonian from the American people. In the case of these stamps, they were the first items in what became the national philatelic collection, housed today under its own roof at the Smithsonian's National Postal Museum.

Steve Wheeler shares a presentation Web 3.0: The way forward?. Steve takes a three-fold view of web development: 1.0=linking, 2.0=participation, 3.0=existing data reconnected for smarter uses. Stephen Downes responds "let me be the first to name the new web: Web eXtended (or just Web X)…idea of Web X is that it combines web 2.0 (social web) and web 3.0 (semantic web) to create what I have called, in the past, the semantic social web. But it's more than just that, because it takes these and moves them off the web and into your hand. And more than just that, because it's the web of data, the geoweb, augmented media, the 3D web, and more. The eXtended web - the web, extended from the internet, into your life."

I'm a visual learner, so physically viewing something is my preferred experience in life. It is this characteristic that causes me to find a lot of great images and videos on the web. In fact, I find so much interesting stuff that sometimes I just want to save it, so I turn to bookmarking and web clipping apps.

Learning never stops, but for it to start, it must be engaging and have relevance to the learner. The process is cyclical, starting with a big idea which provides a real-world context, and continues through to reflection, where the initial assumptions are revisited and where to go next is explored.

Casa Notes - 0 views

  • Casa Notes is designed to allow teachers to quickly make, and customize, typical notes that are sent home to parents or given to the students. This is done by using templates and allowing the teachers to customize some of the content, choose a color scheme and add a graphic. The notes can then be printed on a black-and-white or color printer to be used. Teachers can select whether the notes should be in English or in Spanish.

Knowledge-Based Education - We oppose the teaching of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) (values clarification), critical thinking skills and similar programs that are simply a relabeling of Outcome-Based Education (OBE) (mastery learning) which focus on behavior modification and have the purpose of challenging the student's fixed beliefs and undermining parental authority.

Wikipedia for Schools - 0 views

"Welcome to Wikipedia for Schools! This selection of articles from Wikipedia matches the UK National Curriculum and can be used by school children around the world. 6000 articles, 26 million words and 50,000 images make Wikipedia for Schools bigger than Harry Potter, the Lord of the Rings and the Chronicles of Narnia put together! Wikipedia is great, but it wasn't designed with the National Curriculum in mind. And because anyone can edit it, articles sometimes get vandalised. That's why we've put together this special collection to make learning as easy and safe as it can be. Here at SOS Children, we've checked all the articles, tidied them up a bit, and put them together by school subject."
